Suffice to say, a legal immigrant who went through the complete probably knows more about the nation than most of us do. You are talking specifically about naturalized citizens, but there are many immigrants residing here legally who do not go through the naturalization process for one reason or another. Additionally, "they have to know a lot about the nation" - eh, not really. They ask up to 10 questions out of a pool of ... 100. Considering it takes a minimum of 2 years and 9 months for someone to go through a full naturalization process (oftentimes more), there's way more than enough time to memorize all that information (just practice a few questions a day for like five minutes a day and you'll have that crap memorized inside and out by the time you need to take the test).
