Americans in the UK have been warned to keep a low profile during this weeks visit of their president, Donald Trump, as the US embassy in London says demonstrations against the event could turn violent.

On Tuesday, officials said the demonstrations would probably be focused on the centre of the UK capital, despite the fact that Trump is spending only a short time there, but added others had also been planned over the three days from Wednesday.

Be aware of your surroundings [and] exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings that may become violent, the US embassy warned.

The warning comes after it emerged that the UK police mobilisation for Trumps visit would be the largest since the 2011 English riots.

Officers will be moved around the country to protect the US president, with those in regions Trump is not visiting giving assistance to the services in those he is. Its scale is such that some police chiefs have expressed concerns they will not have enough resources for their usual local policing duties.

With the hot weather, if anything kicks off, we are struggling. They cut the officers in the urban areas [biggest forces] and now they need them, one told the Guardian on Monday. Firearms officers, armed counter-terrorism units, public order officers and dog handlers are all part of the deployment.

In their warning on Tuesday, the embassy told American citizens to expect the largest demonstration in central London on Friday 13 July, when organisers hope tens of thousands of people will be on the streets. A Trump baby balloon is also due to fly over central London that morning.

if this some other countries I might think it was a real threat but I don't know if most british would actually murder a random american during a riot. I don't know, maybe I give them too much credit. but I don't think britain hates america that much.

Nothing to worry about if you're not a Trump supporter. Just because Trumpeters are too stupid to understand nuance doesn't mean everyone else is.

I have no particular love for Trump, but has he actually done anything far worse than other presidents so far?

When my wife and I were in Europe (including London airport) last week, no one seemed to give a shit that we were American.

I'll preface with with I've never been to England post Trump but have been several times before Trump.

My first trip I was worried because of how Americans are spoken of and to online.

Upon getting there I had a fabulous time and met a ton of great people. I didn't really ask many people but of the two that I did who I ended up with for several days of my trip they basically gave the same answer of "there's a lot of distain for the idea of Americans but not of any American". They said most American tourists are friendly, interested, generous and fun.

Maybe that's just the type to travel often isn't the type to fall into the standard stereotype. Idk.

So my guess is that they won't have a hard time separating a hatred of Trump from Joe schmo from NYC going to visit his cousin.

yeah honestly no american visitors will have a bad time because of the protest

i lol'd that the embassy is warning americans because the idea that people here would be like "oi ur trump's people" and go on to slagging you off or causing trouble is 0

we're friendly to most people, and we tend not to tell you if we dislike you. so chances are that you'll never know

i would be worried about going anywhere where trump would go. the american's in haiti faced bad times but i think that was because they started hiking fuel prices so high on a meager Haitian budget (they happen to be stuck in that hotel and couldn't get out).
