the one time i see the benefit is when parallel parking, but if you have a backup camera that's not even an issue.

once you get used to a area or commute driving around isn't really an issue. and driving a long trip is more exciting than being a passenger

I would take a less expensive regular car over an expensive self-driving car every time

Extra productivity during the day is never a bad thing. Do some work on your commute.

Also once cars are fully autonomous, designated drivers won't be an issue

This is the biggest pro.
Self-driving becomes extremely powerful when more and more people get into.
It's even better if cars can communicate at a bare minimum.

We could reduce car crashes to almost nothing, since the only real issue would be the ultra rare glitch...but even that would be reduced with other cars reacting x100 faster. I bet you speed limits would even go up, so a car could be trained to be an ultra safe, ultra fast driver.

Once they become popular, I forsee massive discounts to encourage people to go automated. The risk will be far less, meaning insurance companies can charge rock bottom prices and still profit.

Would manual driving still be possible in your ideal scenario? I can't deny that it's fun to go for a drive sometimes, I wouldn't want to give that up completely

I could see designated lanes for self-driving as they get integrated into mainstream society. Over time self-driving will become the norm and these lanes will be repurposed for traditional cars until they too eventually die out like the horse and carriage.

My question is how will self-driving cars handle weather? Snow, ice, and storms are a significant thing here, so will they be able to adapt or handle that?

Ideally they ban drivers. Too many stupid people on the road that can ruin the autonomous revolution

Probably better than humans. It's not instinct that allows humans to correct for road conditions, it's physics.

I hope so, cause I'd love a self-driving car.

Yeah, a machine would know better than to brake while hydroplaning or on a patch of ice. Meanwhile, the startled human driver sometimes doesn't think and makes a bad knee-jerk reaction

It'll be necessary, as there will always be situations in which manual control is superior. But for rote traffic, autonomous driving will be superior.

benefit is that you can take a long drive and sleep or read a book or something.

imagine traveling long distances during the night and sleeping and then waking up at your destination.

and it lets people who don't know how to drive, have freedom to get around and not have to walk or ride a bike or rely on the bus.

that last one is why I want one. I would love to be able to get around in my city without a drivers license and not have to use the bus or getting a ride from my family

100% support this idea then
