How is "respecting" people who fought for the confederacy different from "respecting" people who fought on the British side during the revolutionary war?

Well, they both involve a group of rebels fighting a war against their own country so they can break away and form their own country because they didn't like the country's laws.

Only one was actually successful, though, and for some reason, southern conservatives idolize the one who lost.

So why is respecting Stonewall Jackson and raising monuments to him different from doing the same to people who fought on the British side during the revolutionary war?

I think you'd be surprised at the number of them that do. I mean sure those areas lean republican heavily enough, but plenty of the blue collar union democrats down there have the stars and bars on their pickup truck.

Some of the soldiers who fought for the Confederacy were basically kids who were from poor families, didn't fully understand what the were fighting for and could have been hanged for deserting. Recognizing that not everyone was a monster doesn't mean you support the Confederacy.
