Or how about when you're on the right side of the hallway/sidewalk and someone is approaching on the wrong side and not paying attention, but you would have to go on the wrong side to pass them and you don't want to do that because it's the wrong side.

One of you are going to have to stop and pull out your phone to pretend to check it and create enough distance that it's not awkward anymore. There's no other way.
