The man's got a jar of spaghetti sauce that has a "best if used by" date that says 2012 on it and he insists that it's gonna be totally fine and not ruin any food he uses it on or that it won't poison him. He had dry noodles and made chow mein with them once that had an expiration date that was again, years ago, and he used them anyway and ended up tossing everything because it tasted awful.

He's one of those stubborn guys that thinks expiration dates are a scam to get you to toss out perfectly good food to go out and buy more, which I get to a point. He just thinks that if it's in a sealed jar or can, it can never ever go bad, even if the expiration or use-by date was SIX FUCKING YEARS AGO.

Someone link me to an article or something before he kills himself.

just throw it out. but yeah sometimes food can stay perfectly edible for 50 years but the flavor wont be the same.

I'M TRYING TO AVOID THIS also that's happened and he's refused to learn.

Toss out if it does show signs of decay, it bulging, hisses explosively upon opening, etc.
