I think it's a good thing. If someone was trying to commit another Holocaust, I'd definitely try and deny them the opportunity to do so.

There is no evidence to support the claim that holocaust deniers exist or that holocaust denial has ever happened. It's a conspiracy, I tell you.

If you personally haven't seen evidence to a claim, it's ok to deny something.

Saying "I haven't personally seen evidence, so I don't know whether or not it's true" is one thing. Saying "I haven't personally seen evidence, so I know for a fact it's not true" is another.

If you've ever been around and talked to Holocaust deniers and seen how hard they work at disbelieving -- the straws they'll clutch at to support their arguments -- you'd know that Holocaust denial is rarely motivated by honest skepticism.

Like a lot of paranoid conspiracy fantasists, Holocaust deniers like to portray themselves as shrewd, hard-headed skeptics. But it seems to me that in reality, they're hook-line-and-sinker gullible types who are more ready than most to gulp down any half-baked nonsense if it reinforces their prejudices.

I remember the first time I was exposed to holocaust deniers (as well as people who say that the armenian genocide never happened) was on the IMDB boards. Paranoid ass people, where they always linked to those conspiracy websites with those annoying ass color font changes with a black background.

Far too many of them, unfortunately. Almost half the world has never heard of it, and of the half that have, abut a third think it is a myth or a conspiracy. That's insane.

If they're trying to deny the holocaust, they're doing it for a reason, likely to redpill even worse ideas into the conversation. Point out to them that what they're doing sounds like holocaust denial and see how they respond. If they do anything but roll their points back, or if they attempt to defend or justify, stop talking with that person. That person knows what they're doing, and is either arguing in bad faith or is sympathetic to white nationalism.

You don't need to be dramatic. Just make up an excuse to leave the conversation, and then don't pick it up again. And then tell all your friends, so they know what to look for in future interactions with that person.

There is a difference between denying the holocaust happened and believing that the stats are overblown.

I don't deny it nor do I believe the stats are overblown, but I can see those two viewpoints being conflated.

Because they both come to the same conclusion: that there's some sort of conspiracy to inflate the numbers so Jews can get some sort of social benefit or control. It's perfectly fine to conflate them because "it's exaggerated" is just a more subtle way of tricking people into believing objective falsehoods.

Maybe. But saying something like school shooting numbers are inflated by things like "guy commits suicide in parking lot of closed school" is bundled with the actual incidents isn't denying school shootings happen or even aiming in that direction.

But like I said, deniers are as stupid as flat earthers and anti-vaxxers

I'd ask them what other historical events they don't think happened, and why.

There are first person accounts, there are pictures, there are videos, there are documents. There are human remains. There's an overwhelming amount of evidence to corroborate that millions of people were removed from society and imprisoned, worked to death, executed.

I imagine holocaust denial stems from a perhaps delusional level of solipsism, which should apply to plenty of other things, or it stems from anti-semitism and/or similar biases against the other victims. I don't think it's a rational belief to hold.

That and Germans admit to it happening. If anyone would benefit from denying it, wouldn't it be them?
