I really wanted to get a Surface Pro, but it's so slow compared to my old MBP.

The pro is twice as heavy, and basically twice as big. Why are you shocked that a laptop is more powerful than a tablet? It has more room for components, which generally means more power. You might as well ask why the surface is more powerful than the HTC Desire smartphone.

Mac is highly optimized for it's front-end. I don't know the specs of either but that's usually how Macs work, they're built to be snappy.
