I don't see why it'd be any different than me shooting them myself. I would assume that the worst case scenario is they put your dog down.

No, he's fair game. He unlawfully entered into the home that happened to have dogs.

Still his fault for breaking in.

I don't think being executed for breaking is an acceptable punishment.

Booby-trapping your house is illegal. But what if I put a sign that says "old bear trap, 1893", next to a bear trap under a window, and call it decoration? The exhibition and sign are perfectly visible when properly inside the house. Just not when entering through the window.

So does that mean that it was illegal for Kevin from Home Alone to booby trap his house when he knew the robbers were coming?

That wouldn't be an execution. That'd be you breaking into a house with a large dog in it and you got your dumbass killed.

About 15 years ago there was a guy on the news. Apparently his light switch was broken. Someone broke into his house and couldn't see where he was going and fell down the stairs. He sued the home owner and won.

Though that could always be "fake news". :/

Some states you're allowed to be sued by burglers if they get hurt from breaking in or you defending yourself. Yeah.... NY and Cali come to mind.

This. If they get harmed from something that nobody could reasonably expect to be harmed upon (like say, you have vats of a corrosive substance left uncovered) then they can sue just as well as if you invited a friend over and they had a reaction.

Didn't someone fall though a roof [maybe a skylight] while they were trying to break in and got money from the home owner?

It's pretty stupid to me. They wouldn't have gotten hurt if they, y'know, hadn't broken into your home.

Only happened because there's homeowner's codes saying that all light switches must be in working condition and whatnot.

Yes, but whatever hurt them is likely to have violated some sort of law.

While true, you have a legal requirement in most places to do so.

Yeah, in one of the silliest examples from CA a burglar climbed through a skylight and fell, going through a glass coffee table on the way down. He was able to successfully sue for damages for sustaining lacerations from the broken glass.
