Neither are reliable at all in the video game industry since most user reviews are littered with bias and fanboyism, or are just straight up uninformative like this:

While most professional reviews are paid for or at the least they won't bash AAA titles too much even if not paid off since they don't want companies to cut off their early review copies or whatever. Not to mention you can't rely on averages of pro reviews either because tons of reviewers work on this horrible grading system similar to school grades where they treat average as 7 or 8, while horrible failure is a 5 or 6, so a 2/10 game will still have a bunch of 6/10 reviews from these types skewing it's average.

Critics certainly have their flaws (and I often disagree with them), but gamers can be the most reactionary babies at times. Not to mention that user reviews are (more) susceptible to manipulation, e.g. people (or bots) spamming 1-star reviews because of one specific issue they have with the game. It could be a perfectly good game otherwise. "review bombing" can be such a problem that services like Steam have introduced measures to try and make clear when it's happened at the very least.

I suppose since I mostly play old games I might be lacking somewhat on this issue - I mean, I've seen the kind of stuff you're talking about happen in action (my experience with this site's Wii U board put me off modern console boards pretty much forever), but in general I find myself agreeing with overall user scores on here far more often than Metacritic scores - Kirby's Return to Dream Land is one major example of this. Perhaps I should've said "user scores" instead of "user reviews"... eh, whatever.
