Number 2 also one of my favorite characters, though in my case I generally seem to like child characters in JRPG's actually, as long as the writers don't go out of their way to make them obnoxious.

Eleanor is also great and adds a really interesting element to the party dynamic imo. She's also my favorite to use in battle, though I did have to resort to Velvet for a small number of bosses as well as most of the final dungeon.

Eleanor seems interesting in combat. She feels a lot slower than velvet though which is a little annoying. And I'm disappointed vanguard isn't actually a step in attack like the description makes it sound

What's the deal with derivative arts and should i be setting up my combos to take advantage of them

I had to look up what derivative arts were, I wasn't aware they existed.

Alright, so derivative artes work like this.

If you have Avalanche Fang set to the first slot on Triangle, and hold the button down in battle, Velvet will perform a combo of Avalanche Fang > Soaring Dragon > Infernal Torrent > Heaven's Wrath. You can set any other artes you want to in the second, third, and fourth Triangle slots, and perform them manually by simply pressing the button multiple times. But if you hold the button down, that specific combo will come out. It's a derivative chain.

This essentially allows you to have 8 different combos set, despite there only being 4 trees.

Use it if it's useful, I guess!

I found derivative artes occasionally useful for the characters who actually got too many good moves to map. (To my mind, this is really only Velvet and Rokurou)

There's an equivalent (but simpler) idea for spells in this game too though and those are absolutely essential in getting the most out of the game's spellcasters. (This includes mixed fighters like Eizen and to a lesser degree Eleanor.) You don't need to worry about that until you get higher tier spells along with the Wizard's Ventite though.

I never used derivative artes because that was too many chains and combo possibilities for me to reliably keep track of. I guess if I made an effort I could have incorporated that in, but I was mostly fine with the set-up I made.

Kinda hard to not get hit and actually attack them when there's 4 of them together. Especially 4 of them and some of those spinning cactus fucks
