Uniqlo is a decent proposition for basics in the USA, but IMO too expensive in the UK now. Essentially their clothes are decently made and totally uninteresting, but serve well if you need to pad out your wardrobe with more t-shirts, work shirts or jeans.

H&M is a good starter place to buy clothes. Again not the most interesting stuff out there, but you could easily buy a whole wardrobe of stuff here and be considered well put-together, if unremarkable. When I first started getting into style I bought a ton of shit from H&M and looked pretty decent. The caveat is that their clothes are not the best quality and tend to fade from washing quite easily, and ethnically they're a bit shady if you care about that.

Just cold wash at <90F, don't tumble dry, don't dry in the sun.

In summary both are incredibly cheap and will kit you out in very reasonable inoffensive outfits, but if you want to be a bit more fashion forward at a cheap price point you'd want to look at something more like Zara.

*Btw if you're a big lad I would not recommend Uniqlo. They're more your underweight asian man territory.

I've never been to an H&M but have been a Uniqlo while travelling, and it reminded me a lot of Old Navy. Decent quality, not too fashion forward, expect to replace it in a couple years unless it's made from canvas or denim. I think they also carried these super warm jackets that were also really light and could be compressed to fit into something as small as a purse. That thing was damn near magical. My sister got one while abroad, and I should have convinced her to get me one.

This is a fair summary but Uniqlo are a shade trendier than Old Navy for sure.

H&M is crap. Shop at Zara. It's still the same "fast fashion" styles but way better material.

H&M is good if youre a poor college student. Clothes dont last at all though. Expect them to start falling apart within a year.

Just shop at outlets. Banana Republic/J Crew outlets have way better clothes that last longer and are just as cheap as H&M if you shop sales.

Except for their coats. Their coats are embarrassingly cheap. Can't really fake wool and shearling but they try anyway.

I got a really nice suit for a wedding from Zara. Didn't break the bank, fit great and I got some compliments on it. It might be fake wool but it did the job.

Their suits are not halfbad actually, I have one and I really like it. I'm talking more their topcoats.

I only have bought uniqlo graphic tees and the hoodies, but they hold up amazingly well for the price. Nice heavyweight cotton tees, keep their designs and shape after many washes.
