With the split in Ocarina of Time, the dark future with Adult Link leads to the aesthetically-bright and chibi Toon games (Wind Waker, Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks)...
While the present, more optimistic era of Young Link leads to the two darkest games in the series (Majora's Mask, Twilight Princess).

You'd think it'd be the other way around.

The Downfall timeline is the one where Ganon loses the most and Hyrule is prosperous for the most part. Always thought that was interesting as well.

Which timeline is Four Swords Adentures?
...or Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland? That game is messed up.

Four Swords and Four Swords Adventures I believe are set before the split in Ocarina of Time.

Not acknowledged by the timeline.

The Child Timeline has a lot of really dark undertones that I think are deliberate. There's a huge amount of thematic and artistic overlap between Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess in particular.

Four Swords is set before OoT and after Minish Cap.

Four Swords Adventures though is the last game in the Child Timeline at the moment.

What's really confusing is where Breath of the Wild fits in with everything.

There are bits and pieces of every timeline in it, from the shattered Twilight Mirror to references to the Endless Ocean Era.

The timeline shouldnt have happened.

That's just what happens when someone tries to shoehorn continuity into a place where there is none.

BotW is supposed to be completely separate from the whole thing, or at least so far ahead in the timeline (at least 10,000 years) that it doesn't matter.

I imagine timeline placement wasn't something the Zelda team was considering much when developing BOTW. They just made the game they wanted to make and they can figure out where to place it on the timeline much later.

I'm pretty sure most people do think it takes place in that timeline simply because it's the only one where Ganon has made frequent attacks. And BOTW mentions that Ganon attacked Hyrule multiple times in the past.

Who knows though.

I'm positive I remember hearing Nintendo say at one point it doesn't fit in the timeline anywhere and is completely independant because it wasn't important.
