The Chinese have shown through the last few decades that that enjoy consolidation of everything. They want one language, no religion, one standard currency, there is mainly one ethnic group, ect. Hong Kongers have a different passport, they drive on the different side of the road, they have different laws, why doesn't China make Hong Kong fully a part of China?

Besides the fact that it would cause an international fallout, Hong Kong's independence is actually really beneficial to them. It exists outside of their normal framework, allowing them to funnel money and goods in and out of the country through a controlled port without compromising their authoritarian government. It's not like it threatens them in any way, and I imagine it makes them killa skrilla.

The Chinese are doing this stuff in slow motion as to not provoke outright violent hostility. By doing it slowly, they can win the war without firing a single bullet.
