Anyone want to take a crack on where that came from because it sounds nothing like it's spelled. You'd at least think it would be prounounced kyoo-yoo

If you pronounce it fast enough, you'll see how fun that word is.

English is far from a phonetic alphabet. There's silent letters everywhere, no more prevalent example that queue which is literally pronounced as the letter q followed by four damn silent letters.

English is the dumbest language in regards to what you see vs what you hear

quay has two pronunciations (key and kway)

"ough" is the most ambiguous group of letters in the language (it makes how many sounds? 7?)

ukulele has two vowels that each make two different sounds in the same word

to is pronounced with an "oo" despite having only one "o". what the fuck even is that

and how the hell did "sh" sneak into sure and sugar

Basically, pronunciation changed over time because that kind of drift is inevitable, but grammar nazis insisted that the spelling is holy and must never be changed. Thus, this is the result.

Not true.

'Q' as a word would just be a 'k' sound.

It used to all be pronounced with a guttural "kh" (similar to German ch).

Not in its original language.

As does "do".

Not that weird. The Scandinavian languages all do this afaik. English may have acquired that spelling style from old Norse.

"One" is weirder.

Probably originally pronounced as "syur" and "syooger".

Actually the correct way to pronounce ukulele has the vowels sounding the same both times. Vowel sounds don't change in Hawaiian. The correct pronunciation is like oo koo lay lay. But you fricken haoles just say what you like huh? Lol jk.
