That being said, I don't get people who call it a terrible game. It (and by "it", I mean OOT 3D) is still pretty fun to play, even today. I had a pretty good mental map of the game world by the end, and its world building is still really nice. Combat may be dry and full of unnecessary waiting, but I can still appreciate it for what it is and what it did.

I've watched a lot of videos on youtube about good game design and whatnot, and I had convinced myself that Ocarina of Time was just an OK game that was released at the right time.... Until I played it again about a year ago. It's fucking great. Majora's Mask and 1987 Zelda are still my favorites, though.

Maybe not, but I do think Ocarina of Time has the best dungeon designs out of all the Zelda games.

It was astounding at the time, an incredible experience to play a Zelda game reimagined in a 3D world.

It certainly suffers today in comparisons to modern big adventure games - particularly the largely empty overworld, incredibly basic combat and bad pacing but, eh, that's just progress.

If Witcher 3 came out in 1998 it would have been the best game of all time, but it didn't.

OoT is one of only a few games on the N64 that really hold up IMO. It was so well crafted for its time that it was just way ahead of any other game on that console. I'm not a huge fan of it but damn if I can't respect the level of quality Nintendo managed to put into it.

Ocarina of Time and even moreso Ocarina of Time 3D is a joy to play and feels so good, but there are so many things that stand in the way of it being the best game ever it's not even funny. I say this as someone that owns a physical copy of EVERY version out there sans the v1.1 grey N64 cart.

I missed the 64 era as I didn't get my first console until late 2000, but it was definitely a standout on the N64 and it had a wonderful soundtrack, plot, and gameplay.

This is actually true. Dark Souls is more like any 2D Zelda game (especially 1987 Zelda) that came before Ocarina of Time than any 3D Zelda game, including Ocarina of Time. I feel like From Software understood what made a Zelda game a Zelda game better than Nintendo, and did their best to create their own version of a 3D Zelda game inspired by the 2D Zeldas. The only significant difference would be that Dark Souls added RPG elements, but other than that, Dark Souls is everything modern Zelda should be.

Note: I still haven't played Breath of the Wild. From what I've heard, it's more like the 2D games than the other 3D ones that came before it.

However, the most objective measure we can use is critic and fan ratings, and between both, the game most commonly considered the "best of all time" throughout popular websites and publications is, in fact, Ocarina of Time.
