I'm considered "too neutral" on certain subjects. I'm very boring to debate with in person due to a lack of interest and a lean towards individual pragmatism, not communal.

People who feel a need to validate themselves through stirring up debates, rallying to slay "dragons", craving competition, or looking for a philosophical echo can't stand being around me for long. My nonchalant behavior tends to make me pretty popular with folk in need of a pick-me-up and sanctuary. However, argumentative people typically veer away from any social oasis I habitually create. They're constantly looking for validation and life answers. I'm not. I have very little to offer them.

You can lead a horse to water, but...

this sounds like it'd only be a problem online, maybe even exclusively on CE. i can't imagine my friends IRL ever thinking my non-extreme views would be annoying or a negative trait

You'd be surprised nowadays. Everyone seems to have a cause to champion for the greater good.

this sounds like it'd only be a problem online, maybe even exclusively on CE.

Nope.
I'm talking exclusively offline.

I don't really bother with debate topics online. CE is terrible for it because most of the posts are just trolls on their alts trying to trigger everybody. Insightful on-topic posts often get overlooked under the tidal wave of trigger posts spawned by trolls who just want to see other posters mad.

Offline everybody has their own personal initiatives for acting the way they do, but a very common one is boosting injured self esteem. Most people tend to be emotional and it can impact their choices and goals very quickly. There's a ton of people out in the world who take one hit to the feels feels and then habitually seek out someone they can challenge to reassert a belief of dominance over their own lives.

You ever had friends over and you all usually have a great time until one of them just has to randomly start debates whenever things get too calm? Because due to their dysfunctional history they don't how the fuck to function in a peaceful environment. They didn't grow up in a healthy home and that's why they're now always looking to start shit for that familiar feeling of chaos. It's like a pacifier to them.

You ever been one of the popular people in a group because everyone thinks you're awesome to be around and then one asshole has to challenge you out of the blue? Like you didn't start any shit with them, they just had an enormous urge to 1-up you to prove a fragile little point to themselves.

Or how about that super rebellious friend who's constantly bringing up social issues and passive aggressively shames you for not being as interested in their impractical protests as they are? Some people really do want to support good in the world and spread positive messages. Some other people just want to sedate their inferiority complex by saying they're at least better than someone else because <insert political reasons>.

These types of people tend to be very argumentative by nature, online and offline, because they get off on that surge of validation after believing they've won a self-laid challenge. And a lot of them don't like me because I refuse to play the game, I'm not as thirsty for validation, and I encourage other people to look on the bright side.

One of a million different aspects of my personality, I'm guessing.

It's interesting what things you learn about people's perspective on you without hearing it directly. I take lots of pictures of my cat and some of my coworkers love seeing them. One of those coworkers told a manager (who then relayed it to me because she thought it was hilarious) that she loves how eager I am to show the pictures to her because it makes me seem "more human."

It's getting a little better as I age. Most of it is just pure selfishness. Going out always sounded good until it was time to go out. I don't remember what comedian it was but he had a bit about canceling plans and how it was the best feeling in the world. I identified with that quite a bit. Not to say I didn't enjoy the occasional night on the town or par-tay - but the reality is I would almost always prefer just getting zooted at home with a pint of ice cream and youtube.

how would you feel if people did the same thing but to you, for a night that you organised?

e.g. it was your birthday, you booked go karting but then a few people dropped out because they wanted to stay indoors instead

Oh buddy my karma has already bit me in the ass. I organize weekly get togethers for me and some friends to play a few games and I've been left high and dry many a time. Been doing it for a few years now. Almost assuredly why I've gotten better about flat out telling someone it's just not something I'm interested in or just forcing myself to go when I said I would.
