When it comes to looking at various media, mainly on Metacritic, I have noticed something. It seems that the opinions of fans and the opinions of critics are almost never in alignment and, at times, seem to be almost opposing. Speaking as a critic I do understand some of it as critics, having played a ton of games, have a huge host of experience to draw upon that will alter their perception for better or worse. Critics spot flaws no gamer would care about and worship things the average person wouldn't care about, but also use their experience to gain a much stronger perspective... at least ideally. Yet that's not the case at all it seems.

So... What's wrong? Why do they disagree so much?

Because they're pretentious wankpots so they only care about dumb hipster shit and cry that a game plays like a game, not a visual novel.

Metacritic user reviews are a joke. Look at any game that had some sort of controversy surrounding it and you'll find a barrage of 1 and 10 scores as people weigh in on the subject, even if it's only tangentially related to the game as a whole. Critic reviews certainly have flaws too and boiling it all down to a numerical score is dumb, but at least you can be reasonably confident that they're rating the game itself.

Troll reviews upset the average and critics are paid to 'lift' bad games. I know they've been wrong for years. I've seen games get hyped that turned out to be complete trash. Bloodborne was a dud. Hotline Miami was the worst twin stick shooter I've seen. CoD is a series that deserves a negative score.

Meanwhile I've seen decent games take hits because people didn't 'get it'. Duke Forever wasn't that bad. Mighty 9 didn't live up to Megaman standards but it was worth a playthrough. I mean not all games need to be 8 or above to be worthwhile.

So in the end I really don't check scores before making a purchase. The only thing I'd keep in mind would be word of drastic glitches.
