So you're saying that if guns weren't illegal then they would've shot the child instead? I don't think it's an absurd idea that we see other forms of violent attacks in place of gun violence. Removing the gun doesn't suddenly make those who are inclined to violence, less violent. They just have to find a different tool to use. Yet we have strong evidence removing the gun drops the risk of suicide. Someone who in the heat of the moment has a firearm is more likely to kill someone than someone who does not.
