The Last Jedi is a masterpiece of science fiction more akin to Blade Runner than any of the pop culture garbage that the last few Star Wars movies were like.

Solo WAS a great pop garbage sci fi movie and yet bombed because of preconceived notions of the Han character

And yet both were equally panned by the fanbase. They don't know what they want.

There is a large segment of star Wars fans who preferred having the expanded universe to getting new movies that killed off that expanded universe

People who preferred the stories in the comics and novels to the saga of Rey. They even deleted Han Solo's children. He had 2 sons and 1 daughter and those 3 kids had a very rich saga about them. But the daughter doesn't exist and the 2 sons merged to form Kylo Ren

We want predictable and fan service, no subverting of expectations. More lightsabers and battles, less exposition.

Lukes lesson in which hes teaching Rey about the force (cold, warm, peace, violence) was stupid and a waste of time. (Just repeat what Qui-Gon said about midichlorians, about 30 seconds, quick & precise.)

Yoda talking to Luke about learning from failure was stupid and a waste of time.

The entire Finn/Rose subplot was stupid and a waste of time.

Rey and Kylos mind bridging was stupid and a waste of time.

Except Force Awakens was heavily criticized for exactly this

Err no all I wanted was a film that didn't turn Luke into a whiny man child joker which was in complete contradiction to the development of the previous chronological movies.

I do think 7 and 8 have gotten more hate than they deserve.

The OT films are still firmly the best.
The PT films are still firmly the worst.

It is. It deals with identify issues, self actualization, etc. in the same vein of the BR movies. TLJ and BR2049 are very similar movies thematically

Oh they did but everytime something official cancels our their fan fiction/fan theories they gotta have a shit fit. Of course some of those EU stories were good and they have worked in a couple EU concepts like Grand admiral thrawn and the tie defender they have a long way to go to bring back some of those EU things that fans have loved.

both the prequel and sequel trilogies make the same mistake: they treat the ot characters differently. they're different people. whether it's the writers trying to make names for themselves, or the director not knowing who the characters are supposed to be, it comes off as alienating (pun intended) to the hardcore fan.

Han evolved over the entire OT from an out for himself scondrel to a hero. He bought into and believed in a cause greater than himself.

This man then became a deadbeat dad that went back to being a pirate.
