It's been a while since I've read the books, so I don't remember if they elaborate more. From the movies, it just makes it sound like Dennis felt unfairly compensated given that he basically automated the entire park.

In the book, Hammond had him do jobs that were not part of his contract, and when he threatened to sue, Hammond made a bunch of calls to his other clients which forced him to do the work for practically nothing, so he had a lot of resentment towards him.

But at that time, college loans would have been pretty cheap.

Yeah.

To further elaborate, Hammond was overly cautious despite already having NDAs and he didn't tell Nedry much details about what he needed to do. For instance, instead of 'design a program module for automated dinosaur feeding schedules' he'd ask for 'design some algorithms for timely, regular distribution' or something. And this held for every single aspect of the park considering automation was such a big thing for it.

With such vague instructions Nedry had no idea what the heck Hammond was up to(beside the fact that it must be something really ambitious since the OS was multiple supercomputers linked together), but he complied and did the best he could. Naturally, programs built with such vague specifics ran into a LOT of problems and glitches when they were implemented on the park. Hammond demanded that Nedry fix things up, which really wasn't part of the contract, especially when considering the massive amount of maintenance needed. When Nedry tried to refuse, or at least demand adequate additional payment for his services, that's when Hammond turned nasty about destroying his reputation in the business and such.

So, Nedry's been tinkering with the park systems and its millions of bugs/glitches for basically free and wasting a ton of his time, under threat. Of course he's pretty mad with Hammond, the park, everything. And if he could backstab Hammond and get away with a hefty amount of cash... well, why not? After all, he'd already built a handy backdoor into the system to force it to a grinding halt even before all the conflict with Hammond happened in the first place. Lock down all security measures, slip out and deliver the embryos, get back to his station in fifteen minutes, then restore everything.

Piece of cake. What could go wrong?

Of course, he didn't count on that sudden storm and a dino ambush to throw a wrench into his plans.

Yeah, I remember in the book, Hammond told Nedry to make all these programs without actually telling Nedry what they were going to be for or anything about the dinosaurs. So he had to blindly make these algorithms and hope they would work with whatever it was that Hammond wanted >_>

That's actually kind of funny given Hammond's "I don't blame people for their mistakes, but I do ask that they pay for them" line in the movie.

In the book Hammond was a real shit bag and left Dennis in the dark about what he was programming for, he also was not able to create the right programs because Hammond never said jack shit about things like "design a program to auto feed the dinosaurs", "we need a security command to make sure the fences stay electrified", etc.

When given such shitty instructions Dennis could only guess at what to sort of do, and when Hammond got mad the programs had bugs, glitches etc and Dennis asked for proper pay for doing extra work Hammond black balled him so he was doing hard fucking work for shit or no pay.

The book also mentions Dennis had an ill family member or health problems I think.

Bottom line: Hammond in the book was a fuck bag who was not a good person and deserved to be fucked over Dennis in the book was entirely justified for betraying an asshole who not only black listed his ass but low balled him in pay.

The movie versions are very different characters.

I remember in the book, Nedry is literally introduced as a fat guy with chocolate and bits of silver candy wrappers on his shirt or something while eating at a restaurant lol

I think this is where he was meeting with Biosyn for that embryo deal

He's also a Coke addict, he keeps asking people for it. Even his last words to the others in the computer room was that, that he was going on a run to pick up some Coke from the vending machines and "don't touch my console, okay?" And Muldoon and Arnold keep insulting him out of earshot with something like 'the fat bastard', etc. all the time. It's like Crichton really wanted to drill in the fact that Nedry is a fat slob.

By the way, it was impeccable casting, I do have to say. Wayne Knight's portrayal of the character was near-perfect.
