For the cups, choose a good machine. Machine's like Black Bull are really good but very difficult to handle. I can personally recommend the Hyper Speeder (Beastman) with full speed settings, it's easy to control, great grip and really fast. Don't be greedy with boosting, try to learn the levels by heart.
I would really recommend beating story mode, if possible on v.hard. The difficulty is insane but very fair. If you're good, you'll win, simple as that. There's very little luck involved in F-Zero GX. The only level in story mode that's really a problem is level 7. The other levels can be practiced quite well, just memorize the patterns for the levels that have patterns. Max speed and don't crash into walls, or max accel and snake. Not too hard either way, apart from a few of the Story Mode missions. A couple of them are brutal.

Depends on what you consider 100%. I beat Story on V.Hard, got all machines, beat every cup, and unlocked every ending in cinema mode with every character which means beating one cup in master with every machine (3-4 were really hard because they have such bad machines). However I didn't beat all staff ghosts. I only managed to beat about half of them (without custom machines!). I've heard people consider beating all staff ghosts without custom machines, as well as the other stuff I did, as being 100%. Some hardcore players only consider 100% if you beat the staff ghosts with the same machine the staff player uses.
