40. Inigo (Awakening/Fates)

The last Awakening character is out. Unfortunate, though unlike with Fates where I have some faves that just didn't get nominated, there aren't a whole lot of Awakening characters I like more than Inigo. Aside from having The Best Daughter, Inigo has a lot of great interactions with the other kids -- as long as he isn't doing his flirting gimmick, which isn't the worst but definitely isn't great.

Inigo is mainly notable for what IS refused to let him be, which was a dancer. It's finally been rectified in Heroes!

39. Echidna (6)

Echnidna is practically useless as a crappy hero prepromo, but damn is she cool.

Hero of the Western Isles! Goddess of the West! Ally of justice! Absolutely the kind of lady who would show up on a motorcycle and humiliate some jerk and then ride off into the night with his (now ex-) girlfriend. God I wish she was a better unit. There's a decent chance she'll get ganked before you can even recruit her, though unlike Lalum in the same chapter she can mostly fend for herself... usually...

38. Marisa (8)

Marisa is prooobably a little too high but she's cool! She's much more aloof than most myrms, but in a way that's more awkward than cold. I usually end up making her an assassin because there aren't a whole lot of better candidates and she's just worse than Joshua if you make her a swordmaster, but it's definitely not ideal either. Marisa deserved a better niche.

37. Nino (7)

Nino's famous for joining comically underleveled, though she has better bases than people give her credit for, which is why she's really not that difficult to train. I definitely wouldn't tolerate Nino in every FE, but she's pretty usable in FE7 and will end up the best Sage in the game if you train her. Though Pent's just, like, right there, already good to go, so... you know.

Plot-wise, Nino's probably the most compelling part of the Black Fang plotline, but unfortunately she (and ultimately Sonia, Brendan, etc) don't really matter that much to the bigger story.

36. Roy (Melee)

I have an odd amount of affection for Roy, who is really just Generic McHeroguy. He does avoid a lot of the cliches I hate for JRPG protags at least. He's fairly smart and a competent leader, and not because he's friendly and ~*good-hearted*~ and all that -- he's just really competent at military stuff in his own right. It kind of fits in with FE6's low magic setting in that way, at least until he gets his dumb sword that solos the rest of the game.

Also he's in Smash and obviously there's some affection there but honestly I never even bought his Smash 4 DLC. He's not my fave, is what I'm saying.

35. Benny (Fates)

Haha, how did you get this far, Benny. He is great though. He's completely irrelevant to Fates plot (which means he isn't marred by it) and I have a ton of affection for characters who don't act like you expect them to. Benny's gag of looking terrifying but being a sweetheart is genuinely funny to me almost every time. He's like the FE version of Detective Badd from Ace Attorney.

Whoa, Echidna's not bad at all. She has amazing skl/spd which actually lets her hit with axes (which have absolute trash hit rate in FE6) and her other stats are decent enough. Yeah once your other units promote she becomes kinda middling but you get her long before that happens (and even then she becomes middling rather than bad). Ironically she's almost certainly the best unit gameplaywise from that last set you rated!

Nino's problem aside from being underlevelled (though I agree, not that hard to train, and nice if you care about the exp ranking) is that the payoff isn't much. Sadly anima magic is the worst in the final chapter since no Luna or Aureola (the super anima tome is locked to Athos unfortunately), and E in staves means she ain't competing with Pent even if she squeezes out a couple extra stat points somewhere (to say nothing of Athos). I agree with your assessment otherwise; she's pretty endearing.

This is what I get for trying to talk about FE6 gameplay from memory. I remember Echidna being hella fragile and useless when you're just playing the game normally, though I'm sure she'd be useful for a while in a LTC run because of her bases and handaxes.

She has 35 HP which means it takes like 3 hits minimum for her to die for a long time. Her durability is pretty comparable to a Level 20 Roy, which of course is his absolute ceiling until three maps from the end. It's hardly just a LTC thing, Echidna's straight-up better than Roy for like... 15 of their 18 shared maps. I dunno how much that says since Roy is quite bad (IMO at least, that tier list I linked is a bit higher on him), but still!

34. Naesala (9/10)

Honestly lots of what I hate about Pelleas and Micaiah can apply to Naesala too. Am I a hypocrite? Yes. Naesala really doesn't get the comeuppance he deserves, but he's such a smug openly-traitorous asshole that you can almost admire him for avoiding it. FE10 kind of redeems him but it isn't enough, but it's also too much, if that makes sense.

In PoR he can cast Wind at range 2 which is unique for a laguz but also kinda sucks. I like the implication though, which is I guess that he can flap his wings so hard it counts as magic.

33. Lucius (7)

Great character. The premium light magic user, accept no substitutions. I love gender ambiguous character design - though a lot of it is SUPER gross so you gotta watch out - and tbh Lucius might have been the character that informed that. Honestly I think he has one of the most ~iconique~ designs in the entire series, though a big part of that is just the circumstance of being in FE7.

Lucius is the #1 character I am mad about FE6 screwing over. It has been like 15 years and I'm still upset.

32. Lilina (6)

Lilina is a super underrated character and that's the hill I'll die on! Since FE6 is a pseudo-FE1 remake, she's the Caeda equivalent, mostly in the sense that she can recruit a bunch of random assholes, but also because she's in love with the main lord and is kinda relevant to the plot sometimes. She ends up with some of the best lines and scenes in FE6, which isn't a HUGE bar but it does make her a favorite of mine in that game.

Please vote for her in Heroes CYL3 so she can have a green axe armor alt with Armads.

31. Elise (Fates)

Here she is: the unproblematic sibling. Elise is just pure sweetheartedness, unadulterated (just kidding, she's technically an adult). She really only exists to make you sad when bad things happen to her, but hey, that's also an FE tradition so I'm not gonna complain about it. Elise is also a very, VERY good healer who will be a very good magic user too as soon as she gets tome ranks, except in Revelation where she's underleveled and terrible like half the characters. Elise is not my favorite Fates character, but she's my favorite Fates character on this ranking! The good sister just barely misses the top 30.

30. Louise (7)

Louise has a surprisingly deep backstory that goes into the politics of Bern and Etruria and Queen Hellene but whatever, the real reason Louise gets so high is because I had a h a r d c o r e crush on her as a kid LMAO. Snipers are terrible but Louise is fine, she'll be just as competent as any random sniper and doesn't require investment. Who cares, she's canonically a good enough sniper to protect Pent so the gameplay is clearly just lying.

Elise and Hinoka are the best of the Fates siblings. Leon is cool too. Sakura can stay I guess.

I don't know if Naesala deserves credit or FE10/Micaiah/Pelleas should lose it for (FE10 Spoilers) Showing that the whole Blood Pact stuff could have been avoided by finding the loophole that would have allowed them to escape its consequences long enough to permanently solve it.

I think Sakura was supposed to come into her own at some point, but it just... never happened. Same as Hinoka sorta, except Sakura had screen time, it was just wasted.

29. Tana (8)

Eirika's BFF Tana is the best flyer you're gonna get in FE8! She can promote to Valter's broken wyvern class and her growths tend to work out better for me than Vanessa's. Tana is probably the least interesting of the Renais/Frelia sibling quartet, but just barely? She's still cool and has lots of good supports with various people.

28. Eirika (8)

...Just barely. Eirika is written pretty poorly, essentially as a side character in her own game, but she's got a lot of potential. Despite having a reputation for timidity, she actually does a lot of threatening and flirting and charging into danger and just generally being a tomboy -- it's really just like 3 scenes where she sucks and they're the ones people remember. Doesn't help that while Ephraim is fighting the Emperor of Grado, Eirika is busy fighting some dumb mook from Jehanna.

27. Joshua (8)

Speaking of fighting Carlyle, here's the "secret" prince of Jehanna. Joshua is just a cheap knockoff of Lewyn from FE4, but he's still pretty cool. He's got a fantastic design with his stylish red and black and his nice hat, and being a gambling addict - while not completely original - is a solid character quirk. Joshua's a good guy and a good unit! No problems here.

26. Clarine (6)

Best troubador is here! I had an INSANELY blessed Clarine on my first FE6 playthrough, she basically never got hit all game and nearly maxed her Magic? She was invincible, it was great. That's Clarine for you though, support her with Rutger and she never gets hit again. Clearly Pent's daughter, what a professional.

Clarine is like Maribelle except haughtier and meaner so clearly I like her more? Yep. But counterpoint: does Maribelle crush Narcien's ego repeatedly? Nope. I rest my case.

25. Haar (PoR/RD)

Haar might have the best boss convos in the entire series, for whatever that's worth. He's also probably one of the most broken units in the series: LTC runs in FE10 rely on him pretty heavily, or at least used to. He will crush most of the game but that's durable promoted fliers for you, same as if you reclass Sirius to Dragonknight in FE12.

Haar is held back by his weirdo relationship with Jill (I used to sort of like it but now I am EXTREMELY against it) and his bizarre occasional nationalism that really contradicts the rest of his character (though it would be compelling on its own, potentially -- worked okay for Shiharam).

I'm not even sure there's any doubt. Haar boss convos in Radiant Dawn are basically the Top 5.

As for Haar/Jill, maybe I missed/forgot something but I never really saw much support for an actual relationship in the text there. The Support Ending is just like "oh and they got together" which ...yeah, no thanks. But other than that it felt more like a Teacher/Student thing. Or maybe an older brother (but even that didn't feel quite right to me)

I think there are shades of Haar/Jill in RD but I could be remembering wrong. Either way I don't like any part of that paired ending!

Haar's boss convos are definitely the pinnacle of boss convos. Which is odd. He was barely relevant in PoR and even though he was a member of the army for a much longer time in RD, he still wasn't too significant to the plot. He just kind of happened to be around for most of what happens.

But then you take him into Endgame and all of the sudden he gets off at least one badass one-liner for every boss. It's great.

JillxHaar is squicky but I don't feel the game pushes it at all unless you choose to A support them (which you almost never will unless you like the pairing since they don't overlap until part 4), so eh, whatever, I'll give the game a pass on that one.

Eirika feels much more important to FE8 than Ephraim does to me (9 earlygame chapters to his 1, and a stronger connection with Lyon), so it's really weird that you think she's a side character. It's also pretty apparent her route was the one written first, as pretty much every PC has a real reason to join her whereas several (Gerik/Tethys/Marisa/Ewan mostly, though Cormag is also much more strongly tied to Eirika route plot) just seem to show up randomly on Ephraim's. And the scene with Lyon in Eirika C18 is tragic and has a clear character development purpose, whereas in Ephraim C18, Lyon just abracadabras and steals the stone anyway because hey it happened on Eirika route right? I would not be stunned if FE8 were originally conceived with Eirika as a solo main but then some higher up convinced them that male players needed a hero to identify with.

Promoted Clarine being an unhittable wall is in fact perfectly normal (+avo supports on someone with high spd/luck against inaccurate FE6 weapons feels like cheating), though her magic being good is not!

I liked Joshua pretty well when I was younger and I won't say I dislike him now but the romanticised gambler as a quirky personality trait is not something that has aged well to me. Joshua still has some good scenes and is pretty personable past that though.
