Tigers are a keystone species, they manage ecosystems from the top down. Not only do they limit the number of ungulates, they impart a psychology of fear: their prey loathe to go where tigers may lurk. This allows patches of forest to grow certain plants and such. What do forests do? They act as heat sinks for CO2. They prevent flooding. They allow all this biodiversity to exist and people can go in and (sustainably) take forest resources such as timber and honey among other things.
