I had a dream where a tiger was pacing menacingly left and right in front if me, but couldn't reach me (think "Life of Pi"). And he was saying something (or mumbling) in a Shere Khan-esque voice, but I couldn't understand it, or don't remember. What's up with that?

One of the conservation measures there is to pay people to move into cities. And it's kinda working.

Oh that's pretty cool actually. It makes sense too. That should be done in the Amazon as well, and probably many other places.

They indirectly save more people than they kill.

Tigers are a keystone species, they manage ecosystems from the top down. Not only do they limit the number of ungulates, they impart a psychology of fear: their prey loathe to go where tigers may lurk. This allows patches of forest to grow certain plants and such.

What do forests do? They act as heat sinks for CO2. They prevent flooding. They allow all this biodiversity to exist and people can go in and (sustainably) take forest resources such as timber and honey among other things. Having tigers around saves way more people than they kill.

KhanJohnny posted...

They are way cooler than lions. Tigers will use water to go cool down. They also do not have thick manes, which helps keep them cooler.

The last known poached tiger in China was in 2009. The country is almost devoid of wild tigers but there is a small comeback of amu r tigers in the northeast.

legendarylemur posted...

It depends on the meat but they need 5% of their body weight every day on average to sustain themselves. Zoos will often feed them on an on and off basis to mimic their lives in the wild.
