Look, it's understandable if you can't take care of them anymore for whatever reason. Just take some semblance of the responsibility you took on when you got them and give them away to someone else or at the very least take them to a shelter.

I mean seriously, how can you be such a garbage person?

I just don't get it. Do they think they'll get in trouble for turning them over to a shelter? Or do they really just give zero shits?

It sucks but oddly I'm grateful for the ones who did it to the dogs I got now.

Both cases where less assholish than normal though as both got dumped somewhere they would be taken care of. One in the fenced in backyard of a old woman and the other thrown over the fence of the shelter (found the next day so was likely dumped while it was closed)

Both cases I ended up having the dogs shoved off on me without me wanting them but in hindsight I'm happy it happened

If I had to guess, I'd say most cases are more likely just guilt or shame. By turning over an animal to a shelter, you're basically saying that you aren't capable of giving a creature the basic necessities.

The fact that they'd rather pretty much give a domesticated animal the death sentence by abandoning them instead of taking a hit to the ego goes back to my original statement.

Either they think it's more effort, they're embarrassed to it, or they think the dog would have better luck on the streets than a shelter given how many kill animals they can't place. Keep in mind that a lot of people don't understand the notion of domestication and say crap like, "Well, it's a wild animal, it'll do okay going back to nature!"

Oh, at first I thought you meant like "give them back up for adoption" and I was like, there's a few good reasons, but straight up leaving it on the side of the road is way past fucked up.

Gosh, I love dogs so much, I wanna rescue all the cute snoots.

That logic works for SOME cats. Particularly if they already spend most of their time outside and have proven to be capable hunters.

Still don't like abandoning pets though. But I've had a cat or two just never come back home but see them at a much later date doing just fine.

Some shelters have a fee for turning in animals. Thats one of the big reasons I see for just dumping.

All you have to do is say that it's a stray that you picked up and brought in

I can see immediate advantages right away to just dumping them. No wasting time on ads etc

Plus if you go the official route it's harder to sell the "dog just ran away" story to your kids and wife...ads and calls from unknown people beforehand might cause suspicion.

Hell, thinking about doing it any other way honestly just hurts me physically to even think about...makes me tired.

We live on a farm right where the pavement turns to dirt. It seems like people would rather drop their dogs off here than take them to a shelter.

We have enough dogs on the farm and don't want more. Our neighbors have sheep dogs. Your pooch will NOT fit in.
The farm dogs are very protective and territorial.
Your dog will starve and cannot hunt on its own if it doesn't die from coyote attacks or being hit by a car trying to find you.

But...these people don't care.
