Most people only apply it to mainstream crap. I know I'd rather listen to Disco Duck or Sugar Sugar than a lot of crap that's on the radio.

I'm a big fan of Disco, hair metal, and typical 80's pop music so it's not like I'm being snooty. I can enjoy dumb pop music. The thing is you can tell how low popular music has gotten how obviously manufactured it is.

The majority of this is smaller artists in genres that are already niche and not mainstream (cause mainstream music is 99.9% garbage.)

And this is the point. Elvis WAS mainstream in the past and wasn't garbage. You pretty much just conceded the argument. Of course good music always exists, but people saying music today is bad mean these big mainstream acts a huge number of people know and like.

Pretty sure his music was regarded as immoral and corruptive, along with the "lewd" dancing that came with it.

The changes in the way we consume media nowadays means that there just aren't really going to be huge enduring bands like there were in the past.

This is neither a good not a bad thing, but simply a consequence of change.

it's weird how the concept of the band has really diminished in our pop culture. maroon 5, coldplay, and imagine dragons are really the last mainstream bands.

They'll be back when band music genres are back.

You don't really need a band to produce dubstep, EDM, and all the trap/rap music that is going on right now.

Yall bringing up Queen and Whitney Houston and Elvis and The Beatles are missing the point

There dont need to be big superstar acts like that anymore. Rather than a few radio stations or mtv being your option for new music, you can discover anything you want. So its easier for small or mid-level acts to get exposure. Yeah, sure, maybe less people know them, but that doesnt make them any less good, it just means there are so many choices that its much harder for bands to get huge these days (without catering to lowest common denominator)

its just like indie game development

some people just like AAA titles and can't get with the new program, though

I think its different from indie/AAA in that the music streaming services everyone uses are literally designed to recommend new music catering to your tastes. Spotify gives daily and weekly recommendations and by default plays related music when its done playing. When you click on an artist, similar artists are listed before you even get to albums. Playlists are incredibly easy to make and find, and there is no cost associated with trying new stuff

Which is why its so astounding to me

I have a soft spot for extremely popular cheesy songs as I gradually morph into an older man who doesn't care about being too elitist for shallow fun songs.

And tbh the stuff releasing in the mainstream today isn't really that different. The same ol' criticisms always apply. The biggest thing that changes is the image and presentation.

And yes there's so much good shit on Spotify that constantly recommends you new shit I have no idea how people think there's nothing new to listen to.

I remember listening to Dream Theater over and over again as a teen because I had no clue how to search for more music like it.

The facts are that media outlets are owned by fewer entities than before, and the demographic determining what's popular has gotten significantly younger. Major radio stations are much more focused on chart toppers and could give fuck all about diversity. Though like I said before, mainstream music has never been very diverse. For as long as any of us have been alive, it's all been hook based, verse-choruse-verse-chorus blues derivatives. It's actually quite sad.
