Most people only apply it to mainstream crap. I know I'd rather listen to Disco Duck or Sugar Sugar than a lot of crap that's on the radio.
I'm a big fan of Disco, hair metal, and typical 80's pop music so it's not like I'm being snooty. I can enjoy dumb pop music. I have a soft spot for extremely popular cheesy songs as I gradually morph into an older man who doesn't care about being too elitist for shallow fun songs.
And tbh the stuff releasing in the mainstream today isn't really that different. The same ol' criticisms always apply. The biggest thing that changes is the image and presentation. And yes there's so much good shit on Spotify that constantly recommends you new shit I have no idea how people think there's nothing new to listen to. The facts are that media outlets are owned by fewer entities than before, and the demographic determining what's popular has gotten significantly younger. Major radio stations are much more focused on chart toppers and could give fuck all about diversity. Though like I said before, mainstream music has never been very diverse. For as long as any of us have been alive, it's all been hook based, verse-choruse-verse-chorus blues derivatives. It's actually quite sad.
