14. Vivi Ornitier (Final Fantasy IX)

The Good: Vivi is one of the most inherently likable characters in the series. He's got the classic black mage design and a childlike innocence. His struggles to figure out who and what he is make him easy to sympathize with, especially when you visit the Black Mage Village and they're all attempting to understand something they don't have the capacity to grasp yet. I also like his wonderment and fascination with the world, especially when you visit Dali and he's just going around like saying stuff like, "Gee whiz, a windmill!"

The Bad: Vivi's insecurities and naivete make him easy to be taken advantage of, especially early on. I think his interactions with Puck are kind of awkward because Vivi regards him as a friend and the game tries to make you think it's reciprocated, but it never feels like it to me. Also, his talks with Zidane can be kind of weird sometimes, like the time that Zidane decided that the best way to take Vivi's mind off of things was to take a leak together.

The Best: The scene with Black Waltz No. 3 on the cargo ship is super good, with the look in his eyes as the other black mages tumble from the ship and then Vivi blasting Black Waltz No. 3 with a fire spell. I also love the scene in the Wind Shrine between him and Steiner, with the latter saying, "I trust you, Vivi," right as he charges into the fray. It's a really cool scene.

I really wish this board did not have such a fetish for Final Fantasy IX. It's just not very fun to support Vivi in these things even if I do like him quite a lot. It's like supporting Link in the Character Battle.

I don't think Lopen is talking about Vivi doing well. IX in general does very well on board 8

Well he started this out as saying he's lowkey mad Vivi does well and it's not fun to support him, even though he likes him, because board 8 has a fetish for IX. You know, not because even people not backing Vivi will throw Vivi some saves after their other priorities because he is a good character in general.

Like my thing is that it has nothing to do with IX as a whole for Vivi's case.

I like FFIX too. I just don't think it's the all time best FF game of all time like the board does.

I do toss Vivi a save every once in a while, along with the few other good FFIX characters in the contest. But it's not as exciting to do see him do well as it could be, that's all.

Like to make things clear the only reason I didn't save Vivi over Lightning is tactics because he's not my favorite character left and he's basically a lock to win if he reaches final 3. I was just saying it sucks that that's an inevitability because of the board we're on. It would be fun to root for Vivi and feel like it actually mattered.

Well also because Lightning is a good character too (another hipster opinion I'm sorry)

It's not seething FFIX hatred in any case. Vivi doing good in these things is okay with me. But unless Vivi is your favorite of the field you gotta take him out here.

Oh I fully acknowledge it was the right power move to save Lightning over Vivi there. Like I have no qualms with that.

It was just the way you first phrased your post of starting out saying the board has a IX fetish and Vivi isn't fun to root for, when he gets there thanks to his own merits. If we were talking like, Garnet or Quina or something then yea I would more agree with you on the IX thing. IX isnt even my favorite FF game (although it's still one of my top)

Garnet and Quina and Freya and whoever else from the game all do better than you'd expect

Vivi from any other game is still a strong character. He's not a threepeat threat character though.
