people saying you need the internet to get a job act like libraries don't exist

Yes, let me just take a trip on over to my library whenever I want to check an email or fill out a job application, because that totally isn't stupid.

Assuming you even have a local library, considering these things are going the way of the dinosaur very rapidly. It really is amazing how out of touch with reality these people are.

And then these same people support socialism style welfare for farmers fucked by Trump's idiotic tariffs.

In my area multiple old libraries are being torn down and replaced with super modern libraries. So basically citation needed.

Todays market is about short term investment. Get in, make a bunch of changes that jack up short term profitability at the cost of long term viability, then cash out before it crashes.

Mmm in certain markets sure, but the trend has drastically changed to a stakeholder view for most businesses.

The theory used to be that since customers are what drives profit, and profit is what shareholders want, anything good for the shareholder is good for the customer.

But this left out a variety of things like community, employees, etc (aka stakeholders). You'll note that many businesses have a ton of different things they do for their local communities.

Now, big multinational conglomerates? Probably a different story and those tend to be very complex machines. But many larger publicly traded companies employ a broader set of ...ethics than simply to make shareholders more money. It simply isn't a long term strategy anymore.

Now, the fact that the average CEO tenure is increasing is also a good sign. It shrunk quite rapidly in the early 2000's, but companies are wising up and realizing that to win in the long term, you need to do more than pump stock prices up

sounds like someone is still in business school

when you're in industry your view on this changes a bit

No I finished business school a few years ago and I've been working in a variety of different industries over the past 13 years of my life including manufacturing, automotive and now real estate. Small businesses to fortune 500 companies.

my view on this hasn't changed - businesses that do good for their stakeholders are the ones that will survive the long term. ESPECIALLY in corporate America where these standards are put in writing in their handbooks and their mission statements. This isn't some off the wall viewpoint.

Sorry, but I don't believe that. As long as the US has a thriving lobby industy, shot term gains > caring for their stakeholders. Or do you thing your Healthcare system is good for its stakeholders (aka the population as a whole)? Big business care about big business unless the goverment makes them care about something else. Maybe in certain industries the mentality changes but that's unfortunately still the minority.

You are more than welcome to have your own opinion on the matter. Totally fine.

As for lobbying, most people don't really understand what it is. Of course there are shady deals that happen, but there are also groups representing entire industries that lobby on behalf for good reason. For instance, my wife works in the physical therapy field and she was part of the PAC for the industry. Much of the lobbying was done to try and ease regulations to allow more PT instead of doctors turning straight to opiates. Is that bad? Maybe if you are in the opiate industry. Point is, lobbying isn't always a bad thing.

Big businesses care about profit, and a stakeholder theory is devised to maximize profits in the long term. It's why businesses will donate big money to local projects, finance roads, etc. It is in their best interest to have a good image, and catering to all stakeholders allows this.

Our healthcare system is completely sideways in my opinion so not sure what that has to do with anything

lowest unemployment in 50 years, but still no real wage growth

i'm not even surprised

i still maintain that a combination of obama-era monetary policy and trump-era deregulation/tax-cuts and consequent optimism is responsible for this current economic zeitgeist and that's not sustainable and overdue for a catastrophic correction

This has literally been happening for decades

wages have largely been stagnant since the 70s

i mean the low unemployment

of course wages have been stagnating since nixon killed off bretton-woods

Always funny to see the narrative of Trump supporters meet reality

Trump's claims of "historic, record breaking, unheard of" are often bullshit.

Try looking it up instead of relying on Trump's words next time

Percent is what matters though... You realize population itself is increasing daily? You can't use raw numbers to determine status. That just makes no sense

Thanks Obama.

It's both of theirs. Every economist agrees that we're in the USs second longest economic expansion ever. Trump inherited a booming economy. He did some stuff too, but the rate of change hasn't changed drastically enough for him to take full credit. He's simply been improving things at the rate they were already improving. Even his own advisors know this and want him to stop talking the expansion up because it's basically admitting we're in partially Obama's economy still.
