Not the common high pitch noise, but a soft, low, grinding one. And the sound remains for a couple seconds after you let off the brake. What am I lookin' at here?

Ok what you have to do is never hit the brakes again. Problem solved.

If the car has been left to sit for a few days, corrosion on the brake rotors can cause brake noise until it is scraped off by the pads. With some brake pads, particularly metallic or semi-metallic ones, it is normal to hear a mild grinding noise when braking.

I drove it on Sat, none on Sun, and now drove it this morning. That's not too long.

RIP brake caliper, those pads on it have no thickness and the rotor will need replacing too but f it has been going on for a while.

Isn't the car supposed to do the whole high pitch thing first? That lets you know they need changing. My car never did that.

It only started this morning and my car is currently in the shop as we speak.

It's the brake calipers in the rear. Gonna cost like 700 bucks to fix. :|

Is that something that would just eventually happen to an old car anyway, or was it because of negligence? >_>

The pads/calipers wear out over time, it's normal maintenance to replace them.

Well this is just the ones in the rear for now. Man it seems so expensive.

It does seem kind of expensive, I am not a mechanic but a pair of pads/calipers for my WRX was around $400ish.

This. You likely need pads, rotors, and calipers.

When I hear this noise, it's because our customer usually has gone to or beyond metal-on-metal, and everything is in need of replacement.

This. If you don't maintain your brakes that'll happen.

This. I only know this because my husband regularly replaces his. He does it himself to cut costs.

Isn't noise from brake pads usually a sign that they're low and need to be changed? >_>

Labor costs are well over 100 bucks an hour now a days. Shop i work in is 140 an hour.

700 unfortunately sounds in the ballpark for pads, rotors calipers parts and labor.

Might be able to find it cheaper some places for sure, but yeah that sounds normal

Yeah that's what happened, that's what the 700 dollar price tag is.

See that's weird, so you're saying it's because I didn't take good enough care of the break pads, basically, right? But I always got them replaced whenever the shop recommended it. :\

My shop charges $88 an hour, near Baton Rouge.

Ultimately, yes, you didn't replace the pads when you should have. How long since you did them last, mile-wise?

I'm not sure, but I know in the past, the shop I do maintenance at would always tell me if they needed replacing. That's all I went by.

You should be keeping an eye on that stuff yourself, is what I'm saying. If you go in for an oil change, there is no guarantee they're going to do a brake inspection without you explicitly asking for one.

Central New jersey. It's still high for around here but i don't think anywhere is as low as 88. Normal is like 105-120

Everything is expensive here. Especially rent, housing prices, and property taxes
