You think they have any compassion left to give after a hard day's work? Always overtime, overworked, extra shifts etc...

But Vegy has this weird notion that they'll be dressed up in a sexy nurse uniform and be very nurturing and caring for you.

They make decent money but thats their only real positive. Also be prepared for constant rehashing of her caring for terminal patients etc.

Sounds like a job where you'd have a lot of lonely nights and dinners unless they have a normal shift (which I don't think is too common).

No. Medical school tends to kill people mentally. No one wants to date someone like that.

They work ridiculous, tiring hours and spend all their time looking after other people so the time you got to spend with them, they'd probably want to be looked after.

A lot of doctors go numb after a while and see people as slaughtered pigs. They dont really care for the well being of the patients but it helps their career when they have high good record.

That is my wife actually.

Vegy may be on to something.

Then again... 3 of my wife's sisters are also nurses. 1 of them is sexy, none of them is nurturing and caring.

Do nurses/doctors really make da best girlfriend/wife?

As far as western society: no, not really, for multiple reasons.

I say this as a registered nurse.

For example, working in American medical fields where you typically deliver direct contact care will often erode a healthcare worker's extents of compassion, empathy, patience, even drive (which are important elements to maintain for long term commitment). Depending on where a healthcare worker is employed and the amount of training they've had to endure, what you're going to have left in a lot of cases is someone who earns a fat paycheck, but is emotionally "unavailable" (stinks as a life partner). Because of the commonly long shifts, hectic scheduling, work related drama, and trying to balance that with outside daily responsibilities it's not a drastic leap to describe many healthcare workers as married to their jobs.

Despite that, it is very VERY common for age 25+ healthcare workers to try to date each other in an attempt to find a partner who will understand (and forgive) the drawbacks of working in healthcare. It generally has minimal success, but the hopeful will still try.

Like many things, there are exceptions. Some individuals are just gifted at juggling their professions, emotions, and relationship goals. Most people are not.

Oddly enough I've met quite a few gay nurses and aides who managed to achieve that. And I think a common factor is that they don't often focus on marriage and raising a family as life goals. They kind of just live for themselves and their partners. Which means a lot of expendable income and time to enjoy life that can compensate for inconvenient schedules. Healthcare workers trying to raise families, on the other hand, may often find that juggling a marriage + kids with their career will be a constant thorn in their ass at work...which can already have stressful unpleasant conditions. Meanwhile their coworkers without kids may seem like they're living the sweet life...
