How different are cartoons/comics made in France/Belgium from others made in "the West"?

How important are they to the field as a whole?

Should English have a widely-used specific term for them, just as we use anime/manga to refer to Japanese works?

European comics have virtually no premium on superheroics, and the popular titles are generally more likely to be an adventure or a noir style, often with the adventure involving historical or fantasy elements.

I would argue that, as someone that primarily pays attention to Western comics, I'm not the best person to place a premium on their value to the field of comics as a whole. What is interesting is that the UK is completely separate from the mainland European nations in terms of its comic interests; writers in the UK invariably come to the US to hit it big, whereas the European market is seen as something almost archaic in a way. Most Western writers aren't influenced by European writers and only a couple artists ever transition over to the Western audience.

English's term for comic books really applies only to western titles. We hardly interact with the European comics enough to give them their own specific term. Japan has a much bigger influence in the the US, so the terminology matters more. That's not to say they aren't influential in their own countries, but Asterix and Obelix are really not much more than a blip in the market here.

Thanks. That's largely what I argued. They may or may not be different enough to warrant a distinction, but they're not influential or big enough here to justify forcing a new term.

then he started arguing in french with somebody else who agreed with me and called her unpatriotic or some shit and i stopped

I'm guessing he probably thinks Moebius and Barbarella and Tintin are much more influential in the US than they actually are. That used to be true of US comics in Europe until around the mid-90s. Nowadays, however, Western comics have become a huge source of inspiration for Hollywood and thanks to the 2008 comics boom, the worldwide market for US films is about double the size of the market in the US alone. So it's not really a fair comparison.
