12. Kuja

I had my Locke write-up nearly done, and then you guys just ruin everything. Hmph. Fine, I'll write-up Kuja instead. First and foremost, just wanna throw my crazy conspiracy theory out there: after FFVIII underperformed compared to FFVII, I have to wonder if Kuja was originally intended to be female, but then FFVIII's female villain was deemed a downgrade from hyper-popular Sephiroth, so Square just made Kuja male while not doing a ton to upgrade the character model they'd already created. But that's just my crazy conspiracy theory.

Anyway, I actually really like Kuja, and consider him my favorite Final Fantasy villain (yeah, spoilers for Kefka's eventual placement). He's just so brutal and uncaring, and his role in the story is much less "oh look at this guy that exists to serve as the major face of villainy in their game" and more "yeah, fuck the world, I'm gonna murder everyone and kill as many people as I can, because fuck those guys." And it's a strong motivation too: he was created in a lab with an expiration date, and that's enough for a good, old-fashioned Roy Batty-esque murder spree. Adding in the plot element of Kuja being Zidane's test tube brother, and you just have a really fun villain role to watch unfold, and this helps boost FFIX considerably as a quality game in the franchise.
