This is what I see from people on both sides of the spectrums. The left/Liberals are blind Optimists and when the real world shatters their thinking or wants, they'll freak out. Right/Conservatives know how the real world is and tries to adapt or accept it as is.

I dont see the left as being optimistic, anymore. Many of the voters are good people whose ideas are drowned out by the louder voices (sjws, anti police, anti white, anti male, etc), but they have yet to take their party back from the global elites.

Which is why the Democratic party and the Left are in shambles. The sane and reasonable people are always drowned out or ignored by the radicals. It makes it impossible for people to take them seriously and there's permanent damage that'll stay for decades due to it.

I don't understand how anyone can observe how conservatives have behaved during the Trump administration and honestly believe that conservatives are realists.

Deny. It's pretty easy to flip those around. For example;

Left: Poverty is not going to sort itself out so we have to take an active role in it and sometimes make controversial decisions to ensure that we achieve a better economic equilibrium.
Right: Poverty is just the result of people not wanting money. If we keep doing what we are doing, it'll go away.

Left: Guns have the potential to be incredibly dangerous and we should take a look at stricter control over their ownership and use.
Right: If enough good people have guns, it will balance out.

Left: Drugs are not going away and the War on Drugs is just costing more resources than it's saving. We need to look at the actual effect of drugs on people and how we can move forward.
Right: If we lock up enough drug users, the problem will go away.

Left: Terrorism is not a physical person that can be defeated through pure military force. We have to understand the reasons behind it and correct the international problems that are feeding it if we want to ever have a hope of ending it.
Right: If we kill enough of them, we'll beat terrorism.

Left: We are doing irreparable damage to our environment. If we continue, we could doom future generations and cause the extinction of our species.
Right: It can't be that bad, right? We should keep doing what we are doing in case they are wrong, and there will probably be some miracle to save us if it's true, anyway.

Now I'm not saying it's the opposite, I'm just saying both sides have the potential to be both optimists and realists.

In the poli-sci realm, Conservatives are definitely "realists", but not in the sense people think the definition of "realist" is.
