It makes absolutely no sense to me, especially given the heavy emphasis Microsoft put on its media functionality.

Microsoft may have just decided not enough people owned the fat Xbox One to make it worth the effort to add support? Or it didn't have the proper HDMI port. I don't know what HDR requires for it to be added

Yeah but Sony added HDR to the launch PS4 with a firmware update.

Maybe it had a different HDMI spec, but since both consoles came out within the same month, it'd be weird.

Sony overbuilt the PS4's display controller at launch to be able to be handle the eventual HDMI 2.0 spec(which supports HDR), so once that spec was finalized they could just push a firmware update and be compliant with the new feature set

Microsoft didnt do that and instead opted to give the Xbox One a standard(at the time) HDMI 1.4b output, so they needed a hardware revision to get to HDMI 2.0(and it's new feature set)

It's pretty rare for a device to be intentionally built for a spec that isnt finalized but it does happen from time to time(Nvidia also did it with a Displayport revision on the 900 series GPUs IIRC)

I dont remember how the company is split atm(so this may be a pointless "conspiracy") but Sony sells TVs so theoretically they could have been working that angle on the cost-benefit analysis on building HDMI 2.0 support into the base model PS4

I'm gonna be cynical and say they didn't add it because they knew they'd be able to get some idiots to rebuy the Xbox One S

I say this knowing a guy who ended up buying an Xbox One S after already owning an Xbox One. (he also ended up getting the X as well)

The S came out a year before the X came out. It came out before the X was even announced I think. Although there were rumors about Project Scorpio at that point, which was why I told my friend to just wait a year and not waste his money on an S.

But he's a total MS fanboy so there is no stopping him from throwing them money sadly.

You can find an S for under 300 Canadian easily. A one x is basically 600 Canadian.

And if you go used you can get a one S for 200 or less meanwhile you won't even find a one x.

He didn't sell his original for the S and he didn't sell the S for the X. Claimed they wouldn't give him enough to sell them at the time.

He's really weird though so I dunno. I think he just doesn't like interacting with people tbqh.
