Most of the games on the SNES weren't any good except mostly the first party titles...

The Genesis on the other hand had plenty more games to choose from that were fun because Sega was always more adult and had more violent games.

Yes, the SNES had better graphics by far and a much better controller, but seriously there were a lot more games to choose from on the Genesis that were fun.

IMO, the SNES suffered from having too many gimmicky games based on cartoons geared towards little kids that were poorly made and boring.

I find it is harder to pass the same judgment on the Genesis..

What do you guys think?

This is just wrong on so many levels.

First party titles were better on SNES.
Games that were on both systems were for the most part, better on SNES.

You cant even hide behind Nintendo had no blood. Yes it did. The first Mortal Kombat didnt, Street Fighter 2 was uncensored, and MK 2 was way better on SNES.

SNES crushes Genesis in RPGs.

Its no contest. Genesis had some better sports games and beat-em-ups. Thats it.

I love the Genesis and I even grew up with it and barely played the snes until years later on emulator. Still, I disagree. SNES had the advantage in a few key areas

It's way closer than nintendo kids will admit though

The exclusives were far better on Super Nintendo. There's nothing to match Super Metroid, Ocarina of Time, or Super Mario World. When it came to games that were released on both consoles, Sega had the better version as often as not.

Shiny admitted to liking Sega better and gave the Genesis version of Earthworm Jim an additional level so that they would have the edge.

SNES vs Genesis was the best console war. When there isn't a clear winner, the winner is the consumer. You shouldn't want your favorite to "stomp the competition" because they'll just rest on their laurels and phone it in.

Turtles in Time was one of the few arcade conversions I can think of that wasn't overly stripped on the SNES. Genesis arcade games, especially the sega ones, are far better conversions to the point where a lot of people think of the genesis versions of Golden Axe, Streets of Rage and Altered beast before their original incarnations

Sega I think had a much better idea of what their machine could do and put it to good use. Companies like Konami and Treasure put out some amazing high speed stuff on there like Gunstar Heroes and Contra: Hard Corps that never would have worked on the SNES. Genesis also has a clear advantage when it comes to shmups

As someone who had a Genesis rather than a SNES when I was little (well, Mega Drive in my case), I think the SNES is better, having played it more in the last decade or so.

The first-party games are of course great, and certainly are a large part of the SNES's quality. Super Metroid, A Link to the Past, Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Donkey Kong Country 1/2/3, Super Mario RPG and more are some of the best games of all time. They alone compete with the Genesis offerings for many people.

However, it's clearly false to say that there are few great games outside of those. Konami, Capcom, Square and Enix have various games for a start. Super Castlevania IV, Contra III, Street Fighter II, Mega Man X/X2/X3, Demon's Crest, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy IV/V/VI, Secret of Mana, the Quintet trilogy, etc.

If you like JRPGs, it's no contest, but even if you don't, there's enough there to compete with the Genesis at the very least.

That said, I think the Genesis gets a bad rap. It's undeniably a great console. I just think the SNES is that bit better.

I think one big problem the Genesis had was that for some games you had to hook up extra crap to it (like the 32X and such), with extra wiring and everything, instead of having that extra stuff built into the cartridge like SNES games did. (Maybe this was more of a game issue than a console issue...why didn't more Genesis games have an SVP-style chip in the cartridge?)

As cool as certain genesis stuff like beyond oasis, landstalker, sonic 1-3/sonic and knucks, phantasy star 2 and 4, streets of rage 2-3, golden axe 3, x-men 2, shining force 1-2, and the very few genesis 3rd party ports that was better like wrestlemania the arcade game, rocket knight adventures the SNES was just flat out better. As the one kid on my block and throughout my family that owned a SNES day one (I eventually got a genesis like, a year and a half later), peeps were dying to come over and play it.

I hate to say it, but the genesis at the end of the day always felt like that console that kids got if their parents did not have enough money to get a SNES back when the SNES was pretty expensive for the first two years or so it was out. (I have no shame admitting that the main reason I probably even got my SNES on day 1 of it's NA release is because I got in an extremely bad car accident that left me with a good deal of money for the time).

Road Rash > Mario Kart
Phantasy Star > Final Fantasy
Contra: Hard Corps > Contra 3
Genesis sports games > Super NES sports games
Sonic 1-3&K > Super Mario World 1 & 2
Streets of Rage 1-3 > Final Fight 1-3
Sega Channel > SatellaView
+ most multi-plats ran faster on the Genesis. SFII especially comes to mind.

Genesis had the superior version of Lemmings. Although SNES's version was more true to the original. Basically, for whatever reason the Genesis version couldn't handle levels more than 512px wide, whereas the original version (Amiga) went up to 1284px wide - and SNES handled this fine. As such, a lot of larger levels from the original version were replaced with new, smaller ones. But as it happened, most of these new levels were absolutely brilliant, often far better than the levels they replaced. Most of the great levels from the original version weren't cut, though a couple of good ones were lost. On top of that, the Genesis version then adds 60 more levels, which do vary in quality from awful to amazing, but tend more towards the upper end of the scale.

However, in terms of pure technical awesomeness (rather than being a great port in and of itself), the Master System version was just incredible. Other 8-bit consoles (in particular, NES) had very poor-quality ports of Lemmings that suffered from tile-based physics. Despite having similar limitations, the Master System version pulled off some incredible hacks to achieve near-pixel-perfect physics.
