Anyway, my country just had outrage over a statue of our first PM being taken down on the East Coast. Of course the regular arguments came out; "you can't erase our history!" and the like. They are ridiculous, though. Statues are not how we record, nor remember history. That's books. They are thinking of books. If that is really their concern, why don't they turn their voices to support better funding for public libraries and public schools? Oh yeah, because that is not what they care about.

It's a shame NC law makes it so hard to legally remove these statues. It be nice to have them in a museum, dedicated to remembering how people try to override history.

Southern towns and cities were putting up confederate monuments alongside enacting Jim Crow laws. Theyre a big f*** you to black people and an attempt by the Daughters of the Confederacy to white-wash their shameful ancestors.

I actually think the statues should stay up, maybe even put up more and on every corner. We need more constant reminders of the crimes white people committed.

There's actually emails out (leaked? idk) showing that UNC was far more concerned with donor money than they were with student, faculty, and public opinion.

Like one of them was an email from a donor that was forwarded to a couple other UNC staff and the person who forwarded just wanted the donation history of the person who had sent the email.

IIRC the Governor actually gave them the go ahead to remove it but UNC dragged their feet because they were worried about upsetting their rich donors.
