how linear is the overworld? i'm hearing some reports that it's a lot less open than 8's. also god i just cannot stand the overworld theme, it is such shit and having to listen to it so much will be tortuous

granted dungeons have always been linear in the series (something i wish they'd tweak as well, maybe add some more puzzles too) but i hope that doesn't extend to the world

if you want to play an open world game play an open world game
dont expect all games to be open world especially story heavy ones that rely on a linear path for their narrative

i don't give a shit about open world games, and dragon quest 8 is not an open world game by any means

i've seen some footage and maps where the overworld resembles FF13 far more than i'd like, but i'd like to know if it opens up or there's at least some variety in it, like it's okay to have linearity as long as it isn't egregious like FF13 hallways

There's exploration but it's not open world or something. Pretty standard DQ map style from what I've experienced.

im at the casino now so this is where my progress in the game grinds to a halt as i try to win enough tokens for one of every prize

And Sylvando officially joins! So do party members have to be in battle to gain exp, or do they gain exp even if they aren't in the main party?

Everyone gets xp even when not in battle
You can also keep your pep going if you put them in reserve

12 had its good points
its gameplay was fine
balthier was a fantastic character

its biggest flaws were its story and non balthier characters

no grinding at all. However if you turn on stronger monsters, you might feel the need to grind a little if its too hard for you

You can grind if you want to, especially if you turn on some Draconian quests.

Do characters not in the active party earn the same exp from battles as everyone else, or some lesser amount?

they earn the same amount
if someone is dead they get no xp though

This game is amazing, it just keeps getting better, the pacing is nearly perfect

Do you still find the game challenging at all after disabling the draconian quest? Considering turning it off, but dont want to if the game becomes too easy

It gets more difficult as the game goes, and the post game steps it up.
I'm not doing it my first run, but I'll be using DQ options on my second, and the post game sound like it'll be grueling.

I've been playing with it off and Jasper still put up a good fight. Some enemies still hit pretty hard
