And, in a natural way, she released the knife with all of that force behind it.

Enoch raised his shoulders and pulled slightly away from the edge of the outcrop.

The natural motion for a knife was one of three ways; The knife will turn halfway and end up with the blade facing forward. The knife will turn completely and end up with the blade facing forward. The difference between those throws determined which way the blade should point before you throw it. But Jen hadn't stopped for a even a moment to consider those factors. The third throw resulted in the knife not spinning at all but kept the blade pointing forward. Similar to how a spear would be thrown.

This was nothing like that.

The blade rotated with such speed and force that it looked like a buzz saw ripping through the air. It struck the stone walkway and sliced right through the rock, sending splintered bits of shrapnel flying up onto the ledge. Enoch let out a gasp and threw his body backward and to the side.

The blade caught him in the shoulder, missing his collar bone slightly, and tore a chunk right through his bone. Needless to say there was a nice bit of flesh that was torn out of his body from the impact of this attack. At the same time small bits of sharp rock flew at him from below and smashed into his body and torso like miniature bullets. "GACK!"

Enoch was knocked somewhere out of view and seemingly went limp. Or maybe he was keeping low to the ground. It was hard to guess exactly where he ended up or what he was doing. It was also possible that Jen's attack had instantly killed or crippled him, although that was hard to say for sure.

Leone began to pant a moment after the exchange. It was as if his sense of danger and adrenaline caught up with him after the action because everything had happened too fast. He looked at Jen who seemed to still be burning with an intense energy.

For some reason his ears were ringing, but that was likely because of the intense amount of blood that was pumping through his veins right now. "Jen... you..." It was hard to put his thoughts into words. But at that time she looked really strong. She looked damn near invincible.

"Don't worry," she said, "I'll protect you."

Her eyes were fixed firmly on the ledge above, watching carefully for any sign of Enoch. She had focused every bit of her energy on protecting Leone. There was no way that Enoch could launch another attack while she had her full defensive wall in place like this. Anything that he attempted would be immediately thwarted.

Leone noticed things moving at the edge of his vision. Everyone broke and split in different directions. He thought he heard them shout something but he couldn't make out the words. The only thing he could hear clearly were the things right around him. Were they splitting up and going after Enoch? Maybe if they backed up to the side passage ways they could cut him off before he escaped.

He felt safe.

Maybe he shouldn't, in a place like this, but with Jen at his side, he felt safe.

She was dedicating every single part of her essence toward defending Leone. And, in that state, there was definitely nothing that could overcome her. Well... although... there was also that shadow in the room. The thing that had been watching them from the far door.

The thing that Jen's back was currently turned to.

And, to put it another way... well...

Jen was not dedicating any part of her essence toward... defending herself.

CRUNCH

Something grabbed her from behind and snapped her spine in half. Her body was slammed roughly against the ground and blood splattered out of her broken limbs as she was lifted back up into the air. Jen flailed even in this state of death and it looked like she was trying to form a fist or fight back. Even though she definitely wasn't alive anymore, the instinct of her body was to keep fighting.

Leone took a step back.

The thing swung a heavy arm at him like a club. No, it was more like a tree trunk. It flew past his torso and just missed smashing him into a pulp. Actually, at that moment, he sort of wished for death. All he could see was Jen's body flying through the air, rolling over itself, and tumbling to the ground with a rain of blood and bone chips.

That kind of sight... made him feel like he didn't want to live anymore.

Leone felt his body sway and his legs grow weak. Then, he went limp.

Leone fell onto his side.

He thought he saw feet moving around in the distance. They were... running. They ran away. That's what that movement had been. They had seen it coming and they ran away. Jen was the only one who had stood there at his side, and, well, she had died for it. And now he was going to die too, wasn't he? Leone was about to die because he was all alone.

Aaron was running away. Kidd was running away. Jamison was running away.

He saw them clearly.

Was that it? Was he really alone...?

[END]

who thought I wasn't serious about more frequent updates

Entry 29: Cross My Heart

Leone lay there on his back. His head was spinning.

Am I all alone now? Do I have to rely on myself to get out of this situation?

Or... no... someone will... definitely.... definitely come for me.

They wouldn't abandon me.

That's what Leone was thinking.

.

It was all that Kidd could do to grab Jamison by the shirt and drag him away at the last moment. Leone was the type who would notice something like that. Leone would notice and he'd get away, along with Jen, right? That's how it worked? Right?

THUD

There was a heavy sound as Jamison was roughly slammed into the stone wall near the opening to the lower tunnels. Kidd hadn't meant to push him away that hard but the guy had mostly been dead weight up to this point. His adrenaline was pumping as he'd just barely scrambled away from that giant creature and its radius of death.

Jamison let out a short coughing sound.

Kidd stopped and looked back.

There it was. Twelve feet of pure muscle, and covered in scales and spines. Its arms were like rotted tree trunks, browned and rough, filled with holes which gave it an eerie appearance. It was like if he looked inside of there he'd see the bones and flesh beneath, from where the arms had been torn away by some kind of termites. And he didn't want to look. But he couldn't pull his eyes away.

Coming from there was some kind of strange... powder... like substance. It evaporated once it hit the air and created a cloud of mist that spurted forth from his massive forearms every few moments.

There it was. Hunched forward like some kind of jackal, feasting on the remains that had been left behind by something even greater. But... no, in the same way, this thing looked like it was the pinnacle of death. Could a more fearsome monster even exist?

... There it was. Kidd's eyes flickered to the ground and he saw what remained of Jennifer Lowell. She was a good kid. She didn't deserve to die at all, and certainly not like that. Kidd, to be honest, was more sentimental than he looked. They had been adventuring together since the first day and now... now what? She just died because of one small mistake?

You could only make one mistake, one tiny mistake, and it was game over? Immediately?

In what way did that seem fair?! In what-

crunple crunple... click...

There were sounds from the other side, coming from the lower tunnels. They sounded like monsters but... they were weakened, and slow moving. Perhaps injured. Or just tired. Whatever they were, Kidd looked back that way. He thought he saw something trying to move. Ah, it was just what they needed.

More enemies scrambling around below in the dark, cutting off their escape-

Escape? No... Where had Aaron gone? He must have run the other way. It was only Kidd and Jamison here and-

Escape...? No! Kidd looked back the other way. He couldn't keep his attention focused on one point.

There it was. Leone's body was limp but he wasn't... he wasn't a corpse yet. No, it was impossible to tell from this far away. He looked like he was still alive. Something had made him go limp, but Kidd was sure that he was still alive. Escape? Hell no. He couldn't just run away while Leone was still stuck in a position like that.

Or, hell, maybe it was something else.

Kidd felt a harsh laugh bubble up in his torso and his chest rumbled slightly. "Heh."

It was too funny. He was trying to play the role of a big damn hero but it was nothing like that. Rather, instead, why not look at the situation? As things stand... there was a disgusting and powerful monster that had just chased him this way. And, if he kept going this way, there was an army of smaller foes waiting below.

To put that another way... Kidd was probably going to die no matter what he did. He was stuck in this position until enemies closed in on him from one side, or both, and killed him.

In those final moments, then, wouldn't it be cooler to go down like a hero?

Wouldn't it be better to at least act like he could fight that monster, and try saving Leone, and die that way? Looking as cool as possible? Obviously, he was going to choose the route rather than sitting here pissing himself!

Jamison was just regaining his balance when Kidd grabbed him again and pushed him into the wall... again. "Urk." He felt himself growing weak from the stress of this situation, and also being pushed around for no apparent reason.

Kidd was giving Jamison an intense glare as he held him there. There was something rough but also warm and intense about the way Kidd was holding onto him. "Hey... listen..." Kidd uttered in a deep and serious voice. "I'm going back for Leone. Stay here and keep watch."

"Keep..." Jamison's eyes flickered. "Keep what?"

"If anything moves down there," Kidd nodded his head in the direction of the lower passage, "you shoot it without hesitation. Got it?"

Kidd nodded to himself, not waiting for confirmation from Jamison, and then turned back the other way.

Jamison grabbed him before he made it even one step. "Hey. Hold on," Jamison said.

It seemed Jamison had noticed something.

Kidd looked back that way, turning around once again. Why was it so hard to just focus on one thing?

.

Aaron was dragging his spear at his side as he limped away from the scene of battle below. Some of those strange spores had gotten on him and his body felt numb all over. The fact that he wore heavy armor slowed him enough that he hadn't been able to get away from he paralyzing cloud.

To make matters worse, the weight of his armor was so stressful, added so much strain, that in his weakened and numb state that made it even harder to move. He could barely lift his spear. He began to mess with the latches of his armor, discarding one piece at a time. Clunk. Clunk. Clunk.

Stripping away each metal piece and letting it fall behind him as he was fleeing.

It was a trail of breadcrumbs that his allies could follow if they escaped from that place.

However, right now, he couldn't worry about them. He had bigger concerns. Aaron's eyes narrowed as he noticed a small ledge built into the side of the rock outcrop on his left. There was a twinkle behind the color in his expression. He couldn't help but smile.

Yes, there was a small tunnel entrance up above and that probably led to somewhere he wanted to go.

Now this... this was the most important thing of all.

.

Gordon stood there with blood running down his fingers. The gaps between his fingers were caked with blood. Human blood? No... That thing he had just crushed -- it looked like a human -- but it definitely wasn't one. After all, it was far too small to be a human.

His eyes swelled and shrunk with each heavy breath. Why did his body feel so heavy these days?

Gordon lurched forward. His second attack had aimed to destroy the other invader, but that one had thrown his body out of the way at the last moment. A paralyzing agent had been released from Gordon's arm when that happened. It was his ultimate combat technique which made him almost unbeatable to others.

Gordon had always been small and weak, and yet... still... Cainas had chosen to rely on him. He couldn't fail his brother now. He was still small and weak. He was pretty sure of that. His senses felt so very dull and he couldn't perceive the things around him all that well anymore. It had been a long time since he had seen himself. But he thought he was still weak.

That power, however, gave him the ability to fight back and to protect this place -- to keep Cainas safe. If he attacked a creature he could probably kill them as long as they weren't too strong. And if he missed, they would likely get hit by the paralyzing agent that released from his arms. Once the enemy was knocked down it was easy for him to deliver the killing blow.

The head of Gordon titled to the side slightly, his eyes shrinking as he examined the space beneath his feet. There it was. A pitiful, pathetic creature that was far too small to be a human. It was squirming and struggling as best as possible, even though its entire body was numb. Somehow it had summoned the willpower to get from its back onto its side.

It was struggling.

It was trying to survive in this cruel world.

Gordon saw something, a flash, or something like a blur. Just what was that, exactly? He hadn't seen anything like that before. Certainly not for a long time. No, probably, never. He couldn't remember seeing anything that looked like that.

It was a white streak that moved so quickly he couldn't even follow it with his eyes. His head turned in that direction and tried to track its motion. It looked like some kind of small creature, maybe a mouse or a ferret. Yet it moved with a strange "intent" that made it impossible for him to not notice it. That wasn't just some random rodent. It was a thing that was moving with some kind of purpose.

shunk!

Something sharp struck him in the neck. Gordon winced with pain. What was that thing? Did it have needles? It shot a needle at him! He was pretty sure it had shot him with a needle! Maybe it was some kind of porcupine or something, and maybe he just hadn't seen its spines because he didn't get a good look at it.

With a snapping motion -- with an intense motion -- with a reflexive and predatory motion -- Gordon lunged in the direction that the enemy had been moving. Rather than trying to track its movements he used the weight and size of his body to try and smash everything in that direction. He nearly tripped over his own feet in the process but he managed to cleave a good chunk out of the ground with his claws.

Claws?

Gordon balanced himself on that arm and pushed himself up to a standing position again. His upper body felt more heavy than normal. Something had dodged his strike and then spun around, twisting, and launched itself back the other way with a bounding leap.

For most creatures that he fought, monsters and humans, the spore attack that was released from his arms would have captured the enemy in a cloud and took away their ability to move. Gordon had been counting on the fact that, even if he missed, the enemy would likely be taken to the ground and made into easy prey.

This creature, however, must have had strong senses. Good eyesight, a powerful sense of smell, good instincts, reflexes, and a body that was lithe and agile enough to avoid his area of effect splash attack. Rather, such a creature was the ONLY thing that could perceive the full movement and spread of his spores. And that kind of agility was needed to move through the deadly cloud of toxin and avoid being touched by any of the spores.

Yet, there it went, flying back the other way.

Gordon let out a roar, saliva spilling from his mouth in the gaps between his jutting, sharp, and broken teeth. He threw his face at the enemy and tried to swallow it with one motion. His biting attack would easily smash such an enemy to pieces. He'd crush this stupid porcupine in his jaws, break it, and swallow it whole if he had to. Though it would be more satisfying to torture it by chewing, smashing and breaking its body with every motion!

He saw a blur escaping the range of his bite and then skid to a halt, lunging to the other side.

Gordon turned that way and pushed his arms into the ground. He put himself into a readying motion and was going to throw himself into a tackle. Then, in an instant, the enemy vanished from his sight!

It was bigger. It must have been bigger and stronger than he thought it was at first. Something that small couldn't toy with him like this. Maybe his sense of perception was dull and he didn't realize. It wasn't just a mouse. Maybe it was some kind of ferret or weasel?

thunk!

Something sharp struck him in the side, scraping one of his ribs painfully.

No, this was something bigger. The size of those needles implied a large creature. Bigger. Maybe it was some kind of dog with special abilities? A dog? No, it couldn't be that.

Gordon turned, following its movement. Then it jumped, spinning through the air, and fired another needle while in mid flight. That needle struck Gordon right in the face, causing him to wince and pull his body upright.

The enemy dashed between his legs.

A spurt of blood shot out of the side of his knee! FANGS!

Those were some massive fangs!

If it was just a dog you wouldn't expect its mouth to cut so deep, or its teeth to be so large!

(Gordon had no way of knowing that Zephyr had clutched an arrow between his teeth. When Zephyr ran between the enemy legs, he slashed the back of the monster's leg with the tip of the broad headed arrow. This gave the illusion that he was biting with fangs the size of an arrow's tip!)

That thing was some kind of wolf!

Gordon spun to the left.

The enemy moved around his right side.

As Gordon turned, the enemy kept at a perfect angle and ran in the opposite direction, and moved further and further into Gordon's blind spot! It was an oppressive, stressful motion! Because, at that time, Gordon started to feel like this was an enemy he couldn't possible beat.

This wasn't just a normal wolf. This was some kind of dire wolf with painful spines that it could launch as projectiles. It was so fast that it must have been part wind elemental, or some kind of mythical elemental creature that could transmute its body. Yes, with that kind of speed, or those kind of powers, that would explain how it was doing this.

It had turned invisible or incorporeal, or maybe it had mutated into some kind of shadow. The shadow was stuck to his back, it kept launching those spines into him, plunging them deep into his flesh, filling his body with deep and gouging wounds, and yet... as hard as he tried to get that shadow away from his back, the more he turned, the further the enemy moved into his blind spot!

It had gone so far into his blind spot that it had erased itself from existence!

Without a doubt, this wasn't just some normal direwolf. It wouldn't be a stretch to imagine that it was some kind of demigod, the result of breeding between perhaps the deep god of the sunken earth and some kind of alpha wolf that had dominated over the ferocious packs in the untamed boreal lands to the north. It was said the giant wolves there were so fierce that they could tear down a tree with their jaws, and used such tactics to build shelter and construct their own society on par with humans.

It was said that, to the north, blizzards would sometimes fall for years at a time. The snowfall was so heavy that any human would instantly die from exposure. But the direwolves slept comfortably under blankets and blankets of snow, feeling perfectly warm and cozy. In fact, perhaps, it just made them sleepy because they felt so warm they couldn't help but take a nap!

If that kind of fearsome creature mated with one of the Gods, it just might produce this kind of fearsome enemy.

A legendary warrior who couldn't be equaled, who couldn't be stopped by any means.

Gordon roared, throwing his body backwards and trying to crush his opponent. He thrust his leg back, scraping at the ground, trying to tear it up with his nails or even just the powerful heel of his monstrous foot. The enemy big his leg again and tore a chunk out of it.

Zephyr pulled back one step, two steps, he bounded back and spun the arrow out of his mouth... he pulled it back to where his bow was and readied his next arrow. There had been lots of painful moments these last few days.

All of that time... always... he had been trying to protect others. Yet, time and time again, he had failed. He kept failing to keep them safe even though he was trying. He wasn't big or strong like Aaron, he didn't have armor that would allow him to stand there and take blows that were aimed at his friends. It made him feel helpless when people died and there was nothing he could do about it.

There were people he couldn't save.

Jen was laying there, mutilated, completely eviscerated as if it had taken this guy no effort at all to kill her. Probably, Jen might have been able to react in time under normal circumstances. But since she was distracted by Enoch that allowed Gordon to get close enough to paralyze her with his spores. Then it only took an instant to grab her and tear her to pieces.

There were people he couldn't save. He knew that. But... there were people he could save.

Leone was pitifully, painfully, dragging himself through the dirt. He used the elbow on his stunted arm, unable to get a grip with his stump, and instead simply wedged his elbow into the ground. With a painful, scraping motion he pushed himself up and gained only an inch. It was like he was taking three feet worth of pain into his arm with each motion, but he gained an inch. He was escaping and getting away from the enemy, because he had faith that someone would be there to watch his back.

Leone knew that Zephyr had always been there, always been trying to protect others, and so he had total faith that as long as he could keep moving... as long as he didn't give up... he'd be able to get out of there in mostly one piece. Maybe it felt like he wanted to die, but he had to force himself to keep going.

And his other hand, though it felt numb, flopped forward. His fingers curled, grabbing for the dirt. His nails were bruised and two of them had blood coming from underneath them. Dirt had gotten under his nails too, making them look blackened and beaten. Yet, for as much as he could, he got a grip... and pulled himself... dragging himself away.

Zephyr wouldn't run away.

Zephyr was protecting him right now.

Gordon slammed his arms into the ground, one on each side of Zephyr. Before him, he was sure, there was a massive wolf with golden locks -- or silver -- silvery spines that protruded in every direction, forming a defensive line of spears that could stand up against any charge! It's breath was caked with the blood of a thousand hunters who had all failed to bring it down!

It had the same eyes as the God of the Sunken Earth, which it must have inherited from its father!!

The only hope Gordon had in that moment was if his powerful and overwhelming roar, which had filled his enemies with fear, had the strength to intimidate his enemy. If even the son of a God, mixed with the blood of the hardiest northern stock, could be shaken by his roar... that would stun his opponent long enough to land a killing blow.

"OOOOORAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAOOOOOOOOO----!!!!!"

Zephyr felt his entire body tingle.

But in that moment he knew he couldn't afford to lose control of himself.

There was a quiet sound as he released the final arrow.

It flew right into the mouth of the enemy and struck him in the back of the throat.

Gordon's eyes went wide.

His head titled to the side.

His mouth was filling with blood.

Why did his opponent look so small and weak?

There was a crash as he slammed into the ground on his side... now it felt like he was the one going limp.

The last son of Cain perished.

[End]

It's the scene where Sam invades the orcish tower by himself and he's so unstoppable and badass that they all literally believe he's a legendary elvish warrior.

29. Does Enoch deserve forgiveness?
A. Sure, forgive him.
B. Hell no.

Amazing

Awesome chapter! Very very epic! Go my Zeph <3

Hahaha, what an amazing chapter! Zephyr got some major action. R.I.P Jen.

B, he wants to use the book to summon something wicked and possibly bring about the end of the world. Unless he is willing to give up and let the book be destroyed, he should not be be forgiven.

29. A

Clearly he can put the book to actual use and fix Jen up in some occult way only for her to immediately kill him in some over the top horror movie way and for things to spiral out of control from there as the chances of things going horribly wrong from using the book at all are super high

but seriously, actual reason for this isn't really about forgiveness and more out of character / observation at this point for me. I personally view B as killing him right here and now. I just don't like the idea of killing him in the fucking SACRIFICIAL pit where a bunch of stuff has just recently died. If there was an option to kill his ass when away from the building / this area then fine.

Though then again this doesn't mean he won't just kill someone else here if people forgive him leading to the same scenario anyway so hey, go nuts people

What a great chapter! Poor guy didn't even realize the monster he had turned into. But oh boy did this guy get wrecked by Zephyr. I'm sure it was a bit comical watching a giant trying to play whack-a-mole or rather whack-a-weasel and failing miserably at it.

Anyways, Enoch has at this point gotten 2 PC's killed and that number would be much more if things had gone his way.I think he's past the point of forgiveness now.B

Been saying all along that Enoch is the man behind the curtain and as the villain that means no forgiveness!

B

Though I'm expecting him to be under the influence of something evil. Like the book is making him to it or something.

gonna try to wrap everything up in 2 more chapters, might take 3...

then I'm very likely to write a few short epilogues for whoever might be alive at the end

(but hey if I kill everyone that means no epilogues, right??)
