Cool

Imagine being upset over something so trivial

Imagine being happy with hand-me-downs instead of original content.

So is the issue the fact that it's a remake, or the fact that the main character is black now?

It's just pointless and seems like we're just giving them our "leftovers".

Who are "they"?

What you are going to want to do....is go fuck yourself.

I'm just asking a simple question, please don't get mad. Who are the "they" that you're addressing in your initial post?

I just want to know.

I'm confused. Did they recast a character between seasons or has the show been around long enough to get a reboot?

Ah, thanks.

I stand by my statements though. It's one thing to change a character's demographic and have a passing awareness of how they might be treated differently. It's another to redefine a preexisting character by how society is unfair to them.

But the man who created it gave the show his blessing. So creators can't update their art if they so choose?

Neither would I. I think I'd be more likely to watch the show with a white male / black female couple than if they'd both been white.

But when your pitch is "she's magic, but not as powerful as Whitey," that's a pretty poor use of a preexisting character. It's not as bad as sticking her in a Will Ferrel movie, but not much better either.

Fairly certain it was always at least hinted at that Samantha was treated unfairly by society even though it was her magic that made their life possible most of the time. I seem to recall a lot of nods and winks at the cameras about stuff like that.

Oh, definitely. The original series had a political underscore to it too. But that wasn't about her being black. She wasn't black.

And that's what I'm getting at. A change in ethnicity (or sex or orientation) shouldn't mean completely redefining the character or the focus of the story.

At the same time, it's equally weak to change the character's race/ethnicity/gender/etc without addressing the fact that it might affect the story in some way.

You won't find me saying too many positive things about Wild Wild West, but I commend the movie for addressing the racism that Jim West would've have dealt with and for keeping it to a minimum so as not to take away from the main story. (Unfortunately, the script took away from the main story on that one.)

Haha, yeah, it did. However, this entire topic is pretty much speculation at this point, so that may be the exact direction the show takes. Assuming that it's going to be hamhanded about it is sort of just judging it unfairly, no?

According to Deadline, the new Bewitched will follow Samantha, a hard-working black woman and single mum, who happens to be a witch.

Cool, sounds good to me.

I would not have jumped to conclusions over the announcement of the character's change in ethnicity, but this excerpt spells it out as to the direction they intend to take:

Samantha realises that despite being magic, she's still not as powerful as a white man in America.

Sure, but again, this is just promo stuff. It says incredibly little about the actual show or content, and is closer to an elevator pitch than a synopsis.

I want the show to be good. I don't care if it's a remake with a minority cast as long as that is not an excuse to half ass a show. One thing I will never do is hate a show due to concept alone.

It's not like this is anything new. Sanford and Son was a black cast remake of a British show with these two white guys https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BNTEzOTcxNDItMmY4NC00OGJmLWEwNTgtM2I0Nzk0MGIxZTg2XkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyMzk5OTkyNDE@._V1_.jpg

I don't see anything to object to other than the lack of originality. The race changing is fine.
