Like, if the purpose of a particular plot development is to make an interesting story, you're doing it wrong.

For example, it's more rewarding to defeat a boss that was about to destroy the world than to defeat a boss who... was just there.

It's further more rewarding to defeat a boss that was about to destroy the world and also who earlier humbled the player with a hopeless boss fight.

Etc.

thst's how it works in World of Warcraft. many quests are the same shit over and over

kill 30 of these things

pick up 30 of these things

the story gives a context for why your killing 30 gnolls or picking up 30 orc weapons

Idk about "wrong," but I think if a game's story can just be transplanted into a movie or tv show script like say, The Last of Us, that's wasting some potential. The Nier games use the medium beautifully.

I don't think TLoU is a great example. It does a good job of dragging the player where he/she might or might not want to go, and not just with the infamous Spring non-decision. You have to abandon Tess, you can't save Sam, you can't cooperate with David, etc.

A better example would be Metal Gear Solid 4, where the cutscenes have basically nothing to do with what you're expected to do. Take the dock scene for example. Snake randomly decides he's too tired to move, so LO decides to kill him while he's taking a break. Then Raiden jumps out from nowhere and rather than getting Snake to safety, decides to stop OH. Never even minding that the physics make no regardless of how strong he is, he gives way under the strain and LO just decides to sail away (I guess). So right, back to stopping the Patriots. And like, Raiden doesn't even die, and if he had, LO didn't kill him because he sacrificed himself, and if he had, it's Snake's fault for suddenly passing out for no reason. >_> The only difference in terms of objectives if LO had just sailed away to begin with is a couple minutes of cutscene.
