But literally every streaming service supports geoblocking by your logic because they are legally obligated to do it by license holders. They can't not do it. I live in Japan, so basically nothing on Crunchyroll is watchable here. Do you think they want that to be the case? Of course not, but anime here is overpriced and they also stream on other services here so of course it is geoblocked. The license holders want those of us in Japan to pay for Japanese services. Crunchyroll has literally no say in this matter. If they refuse to geoblock the license holders will just go to Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, whoever agrees to geoblock (which they all do, because again they have to or they don't get to show anything they don't own themselves).

No one really knows much about this particular production because they didn't tell us much of anything in the trailer for it beyond "has four girls going to school to become guardians" and "the cast is very diverse". When people are shitting on it for being "progressive", it's because the primary selling point in the trailer was "our writing staff is 100% women".

i dont subscribe to netflix either. there is no reason for geoblocking. its hard to be sympathetic for crunchyroll when they pay licensing fees for geoblocked content anyway...

Heres the thing Japan still has plenty of good Anime they just dont release it here due to Social Justice and Progressice PC Culture. Anime games like Dead or Alive dont come here anymore unless they are heavily censored. One Dead or Alive game actually sold more here then anywhere else. Funny thing about that was THEY DIDNT RELEASE IT IN THE WEST everyone just imported it.

Plus most of what you see out there on Cartoon Network and others are just American cartoons trying to copy anime like, The Last Airbender

Its sort of a good thing in a way for anime hobbyists because anime is becoming a thing where you have to import again and we arent getting crappy PC American cartoons knock offs of anime

We just had a show where giant mechs were powered by teenagers banging each other doggy style, and that got an English dub. I dont think PC culture is as big a problem as you are implying lol

I mean if you oppose IP then this is a non-issue. But if you support IP then this is just some impossible dream unless we had universal IP laws that covered the entire planet.

Well, making a legitimate preview instead of what they showed would be good regardless.
Yes, there are people who are acting that way, but that is the goal of things like this. You get a group to be outraged over your product, it gets attention and other people watch/buy it to spite the outraged group.

The trailer sucks as it focuses more on the studio and creators than the show itself. The trailer however isn't basically 100% about political "sjw" crap. It's a third tops (and probably closer to 1/4) which is more than it should be given the lack of information about the show itself, but it's quite away from being basically 100% about political "sjw" crap.

I can't overstate how awful the trailer is though, hell the trailer's description gives us more information than the trailer itself.

If a paid subscription service is popular because it provides a certain thing, and then begins producing something outside that original scope, complaining that this isnt what we want is quite reasonable, as it could influence the type of original content Crunchyroll makes going forward.

crunchyroll has a bad site, a bad player, pays their translators a pittance (and probably has this to blame for their often questionable sub quality), has video encoding issues, and probably some other problems that aren't coming to mind atm

the fact that they're making a show of their own doesn't really bother me. It's that they're basically the face of anime in the west, they get the majority of the shows every season, they have a ton of users, and yet they still have all these problems. There are far more fundamental issues to fix before they start putting money into extras

I don't agree with everything he says in videos, but I gotta agree with Tim Pool here on this subject. I like his pragmatic median approach to a lot of his political vids.

I think the anger aimed at this cartoon is short-sighted and a bit bloodthirsty considering there isn't even a completed trailer for it. So far there's just a video patting the production staff on the back and a bunch of unfinished line art. To me it's far too early to be raging at a sketch collection, even when it's partnered with cringey political back patting.

What I do agree with is any criticism towards Crunchyroll for bothering with original content while still having longstanding lousy site functions (that likely could have been easily updated and paid for eons ago...). In my opinion that is a valid complaint from consumers.

I also agree with Tim Pool's point that the best thing you can do when a project like this is advertised and you think it looks terrible...just let it happen. Don't boycott, protest, or bother attacking it on blast. If it's really absent-minded marketing + pandering, the creators are likely going to make it crumble down in flames anyway with their natural extremism.

At the same time be prepared that this creative team might actually produce something that's decently watchable. Good content can come from almost anywhere, some sources are just incredibly unlikely. And they can surprise you sometimes, even it was probably by accident....

I know a lot of people are just looking for an excuse to shit on anime fans, but I don't think you have the full story. Let me break it down for you.

Crunchyroll's service sucks and has been in dire need of an overhaul for several years. Still using a Flash player, all the apps are broken, and the video quality is noticeably worse than their competitors. People have been begging for these to be fixed and have so far been ignored. Additionally, Crunchy recently localized a mobile game based on a popular anime series and needlessly censored it despite promising they wouldn't. But that's a whole other can of worms.

Moving onto High Guardian Spice, the MAIN reason people are upset about it is that Crunchyroll is misusing our subscription money. This was my first thought before even looking at the trailer. The fact that said trailer spends literally one sentence talking about the show and spends the rest of it boasting about their diverse team of white women just makes it worse.

Now let's look at Crunchyroll's response to the backlash. They disabled comments on the video before it even went up, then got rid of ratings once it started getting more likes than dislikes. They took the article off the top news header even though it's normally automated by traffic. They rushed out their half-finished HTML5 player to try and claim they cared about what we think, not acknowledging the root of the backlash. That article also fell off. THEN they closed the massive forum thread about the show. It was eventually put back after further outrage, but moved to a less active forum.

I also want to point out that pink hair has gone on record stating that she hates anime and literally wants to kill all men. Not exaggerating. You can Google it.

No, there are different groups. You have some folks who are doing that, but the site/app quality thing is the issue for us. People have been complaining about their service sucking for quite a while.

Without tracking the posts in this topic, I would guess different posters are posting different things. Some are griping about the site and apps, some are griping about their subscription dollars being used for this production, and some are taking the piss out of the cringey creators.
