That's what death penalty is for.

This was an odd one, but it seemed fair to me given the details of the crime. The cop was absolutely reckless and deserves to be in prison for quite a while, but the lack of premeditation or other aggravating factors makes me feel like a 25+ year sentence would have been disproportionate. Before the sentence was announced, I figured that something in the 15-20 year range would have been appropriate, and that's pretty much where they landed.

they were cops who murdered someone, and then obviously knew it was wrong / not legit and tried to cover it up. that's VERY problematic coming from a cop

How did they try to cover it up? His partner flat-out testified that he never felt his life was in danger and never felt that it was necessary to use his firearm. To the best of my knowledge, unless there were details that were missed, I'm not aware of any attempts to falsify evidence or cover up any of the details.

Also, *everyone* knows murder is wrong, so that's not exactly a deciding factor one way or another.

they said he was backing up towards them, which was a complete lie made to protect themselves from the law.

cops knowingly breaking the law to save their own asses is a BIG problem in my book. this is different from everyday citizens doing it, because cops have the direct power to influence law enforcement

Civilian kills cop=death penalty
Cop kills civilian=minimum sentence at most
Civilian kills police dog=killing a cop
Cop killing own dog by leaving in his car=new replacement puppy

It's plainly evident that the state values those they've invested in to produce revenue for the state, more than the citizens whom the state is supposed to represent.

This, more or less. The fact that a life sentence was even on the table was ludicrous, although the cop absolutely deserved jail time for this stupidity.

Pretty much everything about that post is wrong.

I'm not sure why you're complaining about a disparity when the difference between the two group is pretty obvious. Cops' jobs routinely put them in dangerous situations where they have to make split-second judgment calls with life or death consequences. There are plenty of times when they should face consequences for reckless actions, but in no way is an officer on the job in the same category as a civilian. As for cop deaths, unless it's a no-knock raid or a plainclothes cop (or they otherwise fail to identify themselves while operating in an official capacity), there's a pretty good reason to punish cop killers more heavily than civilians.
