very interesting read. i still have the amazon page for that book bookmarked, hopefully i'll be able to get it soon if i have some extra spending money.

it's very interesting to know that he painted from life models, and from arms that he had commissioned locally specifically to paint from. having examples like that can be a great boon, i know. i've never considered myself to have much talent for painting or drawing or anything like that, but then again i did win a school-wide art contest in 8th grade with a project that involved making a color pencil drawing based on a photo you select from a collection of National Geographic magazines they had lying around. i did a drawing of a bald eagle in flight that i guess turned out pretty well lol.

it was a project i did in the art class section of an elective period we had called "The Wheel", which had 4 different classes that each lasted for a quarter of the school year. computer electronics or something i think was another quarter of it, and some kind of engineering or something where we built balsa wood bridges, and i don't remember what the last quarter was. so yeah, i never would have been able to just freehand anything anywhere near as good as that.

You should look up the work "The Last Day of Pompeii" by artist Karl Bryullov. It is a brilliant neoclassical work with some hints at romanticism and reminds me of David. I would post it, but there is slight nudity.

But reading about the history of these different paintings is so fascinating, and it shows that the art academies back then truly equipped the artists with the abilities and knowledge to even execute works like those.

It's pretty cool that you won that school-wide art contest back then. You must have some talent! I always seemed worse artistically than the other students. Even my best friend drew better than me and he didn't care about art at all. I guess the difference is that I continued with it for decades after, whereas everyone else gave it up.

I know, it's crazy. He doesn't use reference or pencil first either, just straight ink and memory. I heard he basically studies objects and people and just has a near eidetic memory, hence being able to accurately draw an entire car engine on the fly, among other things.

ooh, thank you, this is a great one too, and it makes me interested to read more about Bryullov and this transition from Russian neoclassicism to romanticism he was instrumental in.

i never pursued it further or saw it as much of an accomplishment tbh, because of how it was just a duplication of a photo. i saw my success in it as borne less from artistic talent and more from diligence and meticulousness in trying to create a faithful reproduction of something, and that's not exactly something i found appealing to pursue further lol. but yeah i dunno, maybe working from a model or example like that is a more common process in making art than i ever realized at the time.

Sadly, if you read the Wiki on that painting, Bryullov was highly celebrated and given all of these honors and literally carried in the streets. Everyone anxiously awaited him to do more paintings like that but he never finished any. He seemed to mainly do portraits. Then he died in his early 50s. Just think of the incredible paintings similar to this that he could have been producing instead.

You're right actually. Being meticulous in making a faithful reproduction is part of the training in many art schools, but then the individual is supposed to reach a point in their development where they start making their own artistic decisions regarding line quality, edges, shadows, etc. That's where many of these graduates are lacking, their works still look like bland student works even years later.
