To preface my goal here is to post 5-7 pieces a week that released this year until the end of 2018 as it is now September. Each artist will have a little background if any is available. I am going to be mostly genre-agnostic with this topic but it may become obvious what music I do not listen to often.

While I don't expect this topic to gain much traction I'm going to do it anyway if not just for the sake of my own effort to document this year in music and help build my own playlists.

Might have to give it a try if I can find some I haven't attempted to self-brew (rip me). Sometimes I make rooibos by itself to enjoy but echinacea is my jam. So relaxing.

Protomartyr - Wheel of Fortune (feat. Kelley Deal)

Protomartyr is an American rock band formed in 2008 in Detroit, Michigan. It features Joe Casey on vocals, Greg Ahee on guitar, Alex Leonard on drums and Scott Davidson on bass guitar.

The band's music has been labeled as post-punk and punk rock. Josh Terry of Consequence of Sound stated that the band "blends the moody atmospherics of 70s U.K. post-punk with the raw sensibility of their Motor City garage-rock forebears." The band's sound was compared to other post-punk acts such as Wire, the Fall, Pere Ubu, the Constantines and Iceage, as well as local acts, most notably Tyvek. Vocalist Joe Casey also expressed appreciation for Pere Ubu and the Fall.

Casey's baritone vocals were also compared to those of Ian Curtis of Joy Division, Mark E. Smith of the Fall and Nick Cave.

Kelley Deal (born June 10, 1961) is an American musician. She is the lead guitarist of The Breeders and also has a solo career.

It might have something to do with the videos though.

Let's see a mix up of genre. Unless this really is all you listen to.

Here are my tags for my listening history last week.

I'm sure I'll end up deviating from emo/post-punk/punk/indie (such a broad genre) a little bit but honestly, the majority of the stuff I'm into falls within these genres with the exception of some dreampop, shoegaze, psychedelic, twee and math rock. Also I feel like a total cliche genre thumping like that, but whatever.

I haven't kept up on hip hop this year like I used to but I enjoy some stuff like Milo, Busdriver, Aesop Rock, MF Doom, Doomtree, Deltron 3030 etc.

Most of the stuff I post isn't going to be very popular (with some exceptions) so I don't think it's exactly super accessible like in the frame of current popular music. Actually thinking about it I think most of the stuff I'm into has been popular at some point but was driven back underground in recent years.

IDLES - DANNY NEDELKO

Idles, stylised as IDLES, are an English punk rock band formed in Bristol in 2011. Their debut album, Brutalism, was released in 2017 to critical acclaim, as was their second album Joy as an Act of Resistance in 2018.

Singer Joe Talbot summarizes [Joy As An Act Of Resistance]: This album is an attempt to be vulnerable to our audience and to encourage vulnerability; a brave naked smile in this shitty new world. We have stripped back the songs and lyrics to our bare flesh to allow each other to breathe, to celebrate our differences, and act as an ode to communities and the individuals that forge them. Because without our community, wed be nothing.

Eh, I guarantee I will post something you hate by the time the year is over. As an example I have a soft spot for simple pop punk and grunge revival with abrasive vocals which people understandably often hate.

I discover via
1. People I know
2. Curated playlists on Apple Music.
3. Other generated recommendations on Apple Music.
4. Generated recommendations on Last.fm
5. A few genre specific subreddits, most have usable year-end events for best albums that you may have missed etc.
6. Live shows (occasionally, openers etc).

I imagine Spotify is about as efficient at getting recommendations as Apple Music or Last.fm. Meaning I still spend hours digging through a lot of OK stuff to find stuff I really like, some albums will produce maybe one or two good songs. For every good song on a playlist I'll add the album and listen through it while working before deciding to keep it or not. I definitely don't think it's the norm for an entire album to be outstanding. There are also curated playlists by people rather than algorithms that aren't half bad.

I keep track of artists by:
1. Receiving notifications for album drops on Apple Music. If you have an album in your library the default is to "Follow" the artist, so every time they drop an album or single you'll get a notification. If you add a pre-release to your library you'll also get notified when the album finally releases.
2. Subscribing/bell to actual artists and record labels known to sign quality music on YouTube. Yes I know people rarely do this but it's worth it for discovering genre specific stuff. This kind of goes back to discovery.
3. For live shows I use bandsintown. If you want to be notified of when an artist that you listen to is putting on a show in your area it's a really good solution. You can designate the radius from a zip code. It plugs into Spotify, Apple Music & Last.fm to give you notifications about new shows for stuff you already listen to.

As an aside using social media to track artists like on Twitter is a really inefficient way to do it unless you're some kind of die hard fan. Personally I'm not really interested in every concert photo, tour date and random thought people have and would rather not sift through it.

All that said the drawback to streaming kind of struck me when I watched a piece on vinyl digging via a Ted Talk not long ago. The passion these people have is pretty inspirational- like they dedicate much of their lives to finding caches of music just to dig through to find forgotten gems and catalogue them to preserve the history. Often times they're found in abandoned buildings, attics or basements etc. The only thing that will keep an album in my library is if a deal is maintained with a label which kind of sucks. I also see music videos vanish from YouTube frequently and occasionally albums do the same. I worry about how physical media is growing less prevalent in the space because maybe one day when this stuff is history nobody will be able to enjoy it again or understand the culture at the time.

Go for it, just try to keep it to tracks you're really enjoying and do like 1 music post a day if you can help it. I'll admit it's kind of hard for me to not flood this topic with more than 1 a day.

Topic title is kind of a nod to the many people I've encountered who seem to be stuck in a specific set of years or time period music-wise. They often proclaim that "good music is dead" and "music just isn't as good as it used to be" so this is also kind of an effort to share to that audience as well.

Chromatics - Blue Girl

Chromatics is an American electronic music band from Portland, Oregon, formed in 2001. The band consists of Ruth Radelet (vocals, guitar, synthesizer), Adam Miller (guitar, vocoder), Nat Walker (drums, synthesizer), and Johnny Jewel (producer, multi-instrumentalist). The band originally featured a trademark sound indebted to punk and lo-fi that was described as "noisy" and "chaotic". After numerous lineup changes, which left guitarist Adam Miller as the sole original member, the band began releasing material on the Italians Do It Better record label in 2007, with their style streamlined into an Italo disco-influenced sound. [Wiki]

In 2016, the Chromatics played at the Roadhouse in Twin Peaks, Washington, performing "Shadow." Residents of town who turned out included Shelly, her friends Hannah and Renee, and James Hurley with his friend Freddie Sykes.

On another night, while Abbie, Natalie, and Trick were at the bar, the Chromatics performed "Saturday."

Definitely check out Black Walls if you're into it when you get the chance. They recently put out that single as well, was admittedly kind of hard to pick between them for 2018. I'm not sure if they're doing a full length this year or not. My favorite album of theirs is probably Kill For Love, opens with a phenomenal cover of Neil Young's Into The Black. It's not a brief listen though.

Active Bird Community - Unwind With Me

Active Bird Community indie rock band livin in brooklyn [Bandcamp]

In the simplest of terms, Amends is a record about forgiveness, says Tom DAgustino, one of the singers and primary songwriters of the Brooklyn-based band Active Bird Community. Forgiving your parents for splitting up, forgiving your friends for not always understanding you, learning to forgive yourself. [Highroadtouring]

Active Bird Community sounds like the '90s. Specifically, they sound like that brief period in the middle of the decade when the original wave of grunge groups gave way to a weirder assortment of alternative rock bands [Popmatters]
