I'm not worried or impressed. I've been using a Canon printer for years.

Bravo, I smirked.

Anyway, the files can still be distributed, but can't be made available for free download. But they can be emailed. That's beyond stupid.

Also it's cheaper and easier to make a pipe than to 3D print a gun.

I wonder if their justification is because it violates the manufacturers copyright, which is fair; or if it's for public safety, which is stupid because people own cars.

I would be interested in seeing the legality of the law played out in court. Right now you can download plans for a home made gun go to walmart and buy the materials cheaper than if you were to buy a printer and print one out. It makes no sense for one to be legal and the other not to be.

A 3D printed gun would also be awful, so this is mostly pointless.

Cars are harder to use on specific targets, like targets inside buildings, or targets that panic and run off putting sufficient metal between you and them. They are quite useful for indescriminate maulings of people that happen to be outside and near a road though.

The law is a good start to prepare for when printers are good enough to make ones that aren't so shoddy that its risky firing a single round. Or so I would like to say, but criminal groups that are already breaking the law will of course not follow it and will have some way of getting the blueprints around and all that anyway. It will at least make it harder for some not-yet-a-criminal who suddenly snaps to easily acquire a gun though (at least, any easier than it normally is without printers).

Ya, it's down to poor craftsmanship, not being plastic.

To be fair, laws are regularly written up in a way that fails to assist in actually stopping crimes as they're designed to score brownie points.

The main point is "criminals who already ARE breaking the law and likely have the connections and know-how to get ahold of the necessary blueprints and such." Like a drug cartel or something.
