Not saying she's better or worse than Steve King. Just saying I don't give a lot of credence to her claim that the Iowa state legislature is conspiring against her because she's running for Congress. And you shouldn't either. The story is total bunk, with a headline that gives leftists a nice dopamine rush.

I mean, to be fair...this DOES fall in line with the exact shit you've praised the GOP for doing (ends justifying the means and all that) for the past two years.

Steve King is likely the worst politician in America, a horrendous human being, and an open and proud racist. It isn't hard to be better than Steve King.

Like I am legitimately miffed that this lunatic is the best the Democrats could do.

The old 5th had a Cook Partisan Voting Index of R+9, while the new 4th has a PVI of R+4.
.

That's King's district in 2012. And the democrats nominated an insane person in a democratic cycle. Unacceptable.

Not sure why this was suddenly being posted by a bunch of people in Iowa when it's a year old.

Someone probably started it to swirl up outrage against King, deliberately misrepresenting the timeliness of it, and then it blows up from there

FB political people do this shit all the time

Its not like you need to cheat to get people outraged over King though!

The Jets won so I feel like gifting you with one of my "liberal" stances that I feel very strongly about, but haven't spoken to here.

The cash bail system is philosophically abhorrent and I have yet to hear one legitimate argument for it, let alone a rationale for how this has become the standard in the US. "Stay out of jail if you have money" is so completely amoral and no one ever talks about it.

Someone please play devil's advocate.

I doubt very much any prison reform deals actually address the cash bail system or disenfranchisement from a philosophical standpoint though. I would heartily fight for a constitutional amendment to eliminate those practices, if needed. My dream amendments:

1. End cash bail/disenfranchisement of felons
2. Lock the SCOTUS seats to 9 maximum
3. Change voting and draft age to 25

I sincerely do not expect much from establishment Dems on criminal justice reform, and theres still too many of them to accomplish anything without lobbyists pushing it, and all the lobbyists here are on the other side.

And as soon as you express any desire for reform the right will go SOFT ON CRIME! THEY WANT GANGS TO TAKE OVER YOUR TOWN! and its frustrating because that strategy works due to fear mongering

I'm all for prisoners voting. They're the people who *most badly* need fair representation, and people act like convicts can't vote ethically or something which, fucking lol, as if convicts can ONLY DO CRIMES and people who aren't in prison don't also vote out of rational self-interest I mean jfc

Like jak said, you can certainly take away rights if legally convicted.

I just don't like the idea of someone getting convicted of something, and having no recourse to vote for representatives who would perhaps decriminalize said crime.

1. Love this idea and yeah I feel like it should be common sense.
2. Love this idea and that is how a lot of non-American democracies do it (not 9 specifically but I do think that is a fairly good term limit otherwise you have people like RBG/Scalia on there until they are well past their intellectual prime).
3. I don't agree with this. Your argument for "full developed brains" isn't necessarily bad, but we let 85 year olds vote. We let people who think Sandy Hook was a government conspiracy vote. I think 21 is old enough to at least understand the issues if they try. There are plenty of people less acute than 21 year olds voting.

2/3 not bad for someone I previously thought I had almost nothing in common with other than a hatred of Trump two years ago tbqh

I think he means the number of seats?

Which, like, honestly seems irrelevant to me, nobody's going to do it

I'm also more concerned with term limits

As for the voting age to 25 thing, I like KIND OF get the idea behind it mainly just because I do think 25 is the age at which most people reach actual adulthood, but it's still arbitrary, and adulthood need not serve as a barrier to voting in the first place. Most adults don't fucking reach adulthood anyway. Tons of 18-24 year olds are far more informed than their older counterparts and blocking them from voting only serves to skew the vote to older people, which I notice skews the vote towards republican, and I notice who conveniently suggested this change. Really, most adults are fucking stupid about their vote anyway, and being intelligent isn't a prerequisite EVEN IF 18-24 year olds were all stupid, which isn't true. People vote in their self-interest and people younger than 25 still have that.

I actually believe that people under 18 who pays taxes should be allowed to vote. Not being allowed to is taxation without representation and, you know. Honestly, if you're old enough to legally be allowed to work, you should be able to vote too.
