First game for the following characters:

Batman - Batman: The Video Game
Darth Vader - Star Wars (1983)
Luke Skywalker - Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1982)
Han Solo - Star Wars (1987)

For Batman, there were 2 Batman games released in 1986, but they were never released in the US. So the first real Batman game for the US would have been the NES/Genesis/Game Boy release in 1990, which what I chose to list here. The first ever Batman game was a 1986 game titled "Batman: The Caped Crusader", but it was only released in Europe.

For the Star Wars characters, it was a bit more challenging to figure out their first game because the first Star Wars games were from the time of the Atari 2600. Some of the older games don't even have any FAQs for them on this site, meaning I had to consult Wikipedia for more information on some of the super early games. For Darth Vader, his first game is simply titled "Star Wars" and there are other unrelated Star Wars games that share the same title, so it was necessary to specify "Star Wars (1983)" to differentiate between the 1983 self-titled game and other games that are titled "Star Wars". A similar issue exists with Luke Skywalker's first game, as there is a second game titled "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back" that is unrelated to the 1982 game.

Although I feel pretty confident regarding the first game for Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker, I'm far less certain about Han Solo. I opted to put down "Star Wars (1987)" as Han Solo's first game despite that game being a Japan only release. Unless someone else can find an earlier game that features Han Solo, then I'll stick with "Star Wars (1987)".

Probably. But we cant say for sure just yet. There are plenty of perfectly eligible characters that have huge support but haven't shown up in the database yet.

From the looks of things, only a small handful of people are actually going through with this and even most of them aren't really taking it seriously. Unless it's back to a 64 character bracket (unlikely given the unprecedented 20 noms per person), the Board 8 influence will still be felt in the bracket.

The first 361 characters are in alphabetical order, which implies they were the initial characters to be included in the database when the nomination form went up. An additional 34 characters were added on the same day. There haven't been any new additions to the suggestion database after the first day of nominations, which suggests that new characters have to be manually added to the database by Allen.

I mean it kinda makes sense as those games were in development and they appeared in DKR as promotion instead of being created for it. But I get the stickler for technicality.

We don't really know. All we know is the nomination form no longer says the character has to be from a video game and Geralt is a suggested nomination despite not being a video game character.

I hope theyre let in because rallies aside theyre the only things that could make a character contest interesting here. I mean Batman and others have tons of games to their name. Hell Batman has some legitimately great games to his name these days instead of garbage

As far as The Joker goes, he could face a bigger uphill battle to get in compared to other fictional characters who didn't originate from video games. The problem is that some people might nominate him as "The Joker" and others might nominate him as simply "Joker". I've personally chosen to nominate him as "The Joker" and anyone else interested in nominating him should also choose "The Joker". Just make sure you don't choose the Persona 5 Joker when nominating the Batman supervillain and make sure you put down "Batman: The Video Game" as The Joker's first game.

Correct, but that's a European only release, so it might not be fair to choose that game when nominating him. The first real game for the US is the game called "Batman: The Video Game", released in 1990 on the NES.

also, the caped crusader was released in the US when it was ported to several other systems in 1988 (like the amiga). so even if the "it has to be the first appearance in a US release" logic applies, the caped crusader still predates batman: the video game.

I don't think it's necessary to go with the first US video game appearance.

But you're right, it was available in the US when it got ported to a few other systems. So yeah, it's still technically the first game for Batman/The Joker if we're talking just US releases. I've updated my nominations to list Batman: The Caped Crusader as the first game for both Batman and The Joker.

Something interesting I noticed - the initial list includes almost every character that made the bracket in 2013, with a small handful of exceptions (stuff like Magikarp that was obviously added in well under the nomination threshold), but contains some characters who have never even touched a character battle or haven't been in in years, yet doesn't include every character that has ever made the field. Additionally, it doesn't look like it includes any characters that debuted after the last contest; those are all in the first update. Seems to me like the initial list was pulled directly from the 2013 nominations, which gives us a glimpse into some of the "close but no cigar" nominations from that year.
