What in the blue hell are people packing in backpacks? Everywhere I go I see people lugging backpacks as if they're on some sort of hiking trip.

My EDC bag has work gloves, a variety of tools, a lockpicking set, electronics, spare batteries, charging cables, eating utensils, and some basic first aid and basic hygiene items. Theres extra space for water and odds and ends as needed. Basically an assortment of things I'm likely to need daily on the go and a few more should an unusual situation arise in an urban/suburban environment. It has saved my ass many times, and is always an ongoing experiment in utility. Usually, it's less than 6 pounds and there's no reason not to carry it 90% of the time when I'm leaving my general neighborhood.

My hiking and camping pack is an entirely different kit suited for the wilderness. It has enough gear ordinarily for a few days to a few weeks.

Usually my laptop, water bottle, bike lock (the bracket that holds it on my bike broke), hand bike pump, a spare inner tube, a patch kit, and then whatever else I expect to need where I'm going.
