One thing thats annoying me though is that they always portray autism as being some kind of misunderstood superpower and its almost never like that

This board makes that incredibly evident.

The Good Doctor is basically a fantasy. Nobody with Shawn Murphy's issues would be able to hold down a job let alone get through medical school or handle performing an operation. I like it and watch it. But it's basically the same as watching Supergirl. There is nothing realistic about it

Because high-functioning autistics are more interesting than low-functioning ones (and, in general, most tv characters tend to be more exceptional than the average person). And there's some basis for the stereotype, both in that there are absurdly high-functioning autistics and in that autistics are supposed far better at repetitive tasks than the general population (NPR had a feature discussing some university that hired some autistic workers to identify fossils and other samples where the autistic workers both had a greater accuracy and a faster working speed than the non-autistic workers).

Supposedly the underemployment rate is far higher among the autistic population so there might be at least some misunderstanding going on.

"Nowadays" is kinda weird considering that Boston Legal ended a decade ago and Community ended as well.

Higher levels of diagnosis have led to a greater cultural recognition. Whether or no the high level of diagnosis is because a larger percentage of the population has it (and there are a lot of "theories" for why that might be, blaming everything from vaccines to plastic) or because we got better at detecting it (or are possibly over-diagnosing it) is a matter of debate.

Yeah, something like that kinda ticks me off because even the commercial made it look like there would be some pretty insane liability issues. If anything ever went wrong, the lawsuit could point to the doctor's behavior and the hospital might wind up sued into oblivion.

In the show they talked about this worry. But then they just decide to hire him anyway and risk it

I'm fucking Asperger's myself and even I would not want Shawn Murphy to be my doctor. I maybe understand more than a normal person exactly why it's not a good idea

Yeah, although people on the spectrum can get jobs, they will just be low end entry level jobs like data entry and stuff like that. They're certainly not going to become doctors. No legitimate hospital would ever allow that.

It was also ridiculous how they had this hot girl who was interested in Shawn. A girl like that would never have been interested in him.

Anyone on tv that has autism automatically tends to be on the more functional end of the spectrum

Some people with autism can never reach a point where they can live alone or take care of themselves. I just think it creates a lot of misconceptions about autism which is something most people already have a lot of misconceptions about

Still though, a legitimate hospital would never hire even a high-functioning autistic. It is just too high risk and too much of a liability. Stuff like that only happens in fiction, not the real world. Now, a real hospital may hire Shawn Murphy to be a janitor or cafeteria worker or something that doesn't carry such a high risk, but there's absolutely no chance any real hospital would hire him to be a doctor.

For hospital work, you mean? Or in general? Because people on the high-functioning side of the spectrum can get things like high-paying IT jobs.

That assertion is even more ridiculous, given that hot chicks seem to fall for all kinds of guys.
