I don't know. How did the grandmaster flirting with Loki serve him, beyond underlining an apparent quirk for both characters, and giving us one of the movie's best beats.

Actually, having the valkyrie who sacrificed herself to save Tessa Thompson's character from Hela be a lover, would be a good touch, and add an extra layer to the heartbroken exile gig she plays here.

Yeah, Marvel editorials handling of his ambiguous relationship with Richter is kind of legendary.

It was always intended to slowly build from like 1993 to 1996 in publication, but then it got killed by executive meddling and both characters kind of disappeared from the pages, after one book explicitly hinted at the two possibly maybe forming a deeper emotional connection. This was open to a lot of interpretation, because much of Shatterstar's story arc was about him learning how to live as a human being in the 90's instead of Gladiator/Slave on Mojoworld, turned freedom fighter, and Richter is his sounding board through this.

Then they show up again at the end of the decade apparently road tripping across North America as vigilante crime fighters trying to dismantle the Richter family drug trafficking ring...and apparently sharing the same bed. But the narrative itself makes no comment about their living situation. Again, they vanish for years.

New X-Men launches, and midway through the run we see Richter has rejoined an X-Team, with Shatterstar being mysteriously absent. Shatterstar will show up in his own solo books around this time, being written and drawn by Rob Liefeld. Neither book tries to tie together the questions left by the previous decade of publication.

In the House of M crossover event, there is a panel featuring a conversation between Shatterstar and Richter, who is apparently just off-screen implying that they are once again close friends and team mates. Fun fact, the illustrator originally intended to draw Richter here and just forgot. Looking at the panel, you can totally tell.

2006, Peter David launches X-Factor v.3 and has Richter, recently depowered and suicidal (a recurring issue for him), join the team. About twelve or so issues into that his relationship with Shatterstar is explicitly mentioned. While it's not confirmed, it is clear that most of the X-verse believes they were a couple with history. That remains the status quo until X-Factor 45-50, when Shatterstar rejoins the team in dramatic fashion and confirms like fifteen years of speculation about the couple. It gets a headline in nerd mags and websites, and Rob Liefeld throws a hissy before shutting the fuck up and learning to draw some goddamn feet.

I don't see why they need to push gay actors, we've already had a number in Marvel films.

And we are getting gay characters (Wiccan and Hulking) if Infinity War leaks are legit, and there are more they can play up.

Mystique's real love interest is Destiny, a woman and originally Mystique and Destiny we're going to be Nightcrawler's parents.

Loki getting impregnated by the giant horse is a pretty memorable piece from Norse mythology just for the pure wtf reaction from it.

The TV shows have also had gay or bisexual characters already.

Jeph Loeb had other plans, reframing his X-Force story as a defrosting ice queen, taught how to live as a human by edgy 90's teenagers who mosh to the Beastie Boys, sass their parents, and go on dates to the mall (gasp). Shatterstar moved away from Liefeld's vision pretty much from the moment the 1992 X-crossover event ended. I'm kind of sarcastic in my summary of Loeb's influence on the character, but think it was absolutely a good decision. The 90's didn't need anymore anti-hero edgelords.

He's getting shifted back, and people have said the writer made a mistake with it.

An asexual person not understanding humans, to me is more interesting than a character who just had to find someone to love.

Shatterstar was definitely a huge sum up of dumb 90's thing, but he never felt really edgy.

The problem with tokenism is that you uplift some groups and end stepping on others.

Why didnt they ask for more trans actors? Are there any Hispanics in game of thrones? Asians?

Its not tokenism when they are actually huge characters in the comics and would fit in just fine. Wiccan and Hulkling both can easily work in the MCU.

With Skrulls and Krees coming up, boom Hulkling can have a major role going forward.

With Scarlet Witch and Vision development, boom Wiccan can be included and have iconic moments with them. Plus, he can get entertaining moments with Thor and have epic scenes with Doctor Strange.

And of course both would be major characters in Young Avengers if thats ever made.
